What to do, what to do?

Well, my brother wants to go halvers on a dual exhaust system for my dad's Christmas present this year. My dad's truck is a '97 longbed 2x4 with 4.6 V-8. I am not sure if this is a good idea or not.

My dad always made fun of the sound my truck made. it was a '99 4x4 5.4 with a glasspack splitter. SI/DO duals at 45 angle out the back. He said it was too loud. So that rules out that for him.

He does like a rumbling throaty sound, but he soesn't like volume.

I don't want to kill the low end torque. High speed improvements aren't an issue...he doesn't drive fast or on interstates that much.

Basically...he's a simple man that does like power, but ain't gonna give up much to get it!

Example: his truck! he just bought it. It's a '97 XL longbed with no frills except it had vent visors and new white letter tires on it when he bought it. That's it. And it's the NICEST TRUCK he has EVER had! Sad ain't it! He just don't know how to live it up!

Anyhoo...give me some suggestions for a muffler(s) that will provide...
--low cost
--throaty sound
--not much volume
--no low end torque loss

We will prolly just buy the muff and have a local shop bend the pipes. That will surely be cheaper than buying an entire system. I had my cat-back duals installed for $160 a couple of years ago. all custom bent and glass pack splitter by my local shop.

Thanks all

Full Boar quiet tone muffler ("Q" series), or you could go for the "F" series, which is the more aggressive tone muffler. Costs somewhere around 50 bucks for the muffler. Order muffler and have shop make pipes and tips.
i have the "Q" on my 98 4.6 and it GROWLS!! When i putter off it burbles great, then when i step on it, ROAR! Sounds good and drones out on the highway so its not annoying at 70mph. Its not too loud just sounds great!

Everything you need says Gibson!

~No low end tq. loss.
~NICE mellow throaty voice
~Very mellow at idle, yet lets you know its there when you get on it without being annoying.

Not the cheapest, not bad though... about $275ish??

Your dads worth it

RebelYell,
Read this, this is a nice throaty exhaust when you get in it and quiet inside the cab. Good quality pieces and the tail pipes are cheap and well made. You can forget the tips and save some money. It should be easy and cheap to get a shop to install.

Sorry Rebel,

The Swept Side Gibson is the one that doesnt loose the low end torque from my understanding.

Im sure there are as many opinions as there are brands, but whatever you do, avoid Flowmaster!!! Your dad will NOT like the sound/volume.

You'll find it hard to beat what WLF did for the money. The pre-bent pipes from Magnaflow make installtion a breeze for you or a shop (read: save money). The straight through muffler design will get the best flow (read: horspower) and choosing the right diameter of stuff will make sure the low end torque improves. The only problem is that the pipes are not stainless and may not last as long as the muffler in some climates. The Magnaflow system which is all polished stainless steel would be great, but it is a single 3" design, not dual.

I Used a Gibson on my 98 4x4, I really liked that setup. It had a great tone, but was not loud. Although it would rumble when pulling a trailer. It did not seem to effect the low end, and I was averaging 17 mpg's.

This setup was significantly quieter than the Flowmaster Delta flow 50 that I now have on a 02 4x4. When I need a new muffler, I will install another Gibson.

Here is what I had:

A Gibson 20 something ish Single (3") in Dual Out (2.5"). It was not an expensive Stainless model. Bought @ truck performance.com for $75. (on special)

Midas installed an extension between the H-pipe and the muffler using 3" aluminized pipe, then they custom bent the dual outs to exit behind each wheel (everyone has duals out the back). I did not use any of the fancy echo tips. Cost was $150.

I hope this helps.
