Opinions on Magnaflow-based System
I've been reading this forum for a while and was wondering what your opinions would be on an exhaust system. Here's what I had in mind:
Using the Magnaflow 24' dual-in/dual-out muffler (14468) and have a local exhaust shop fabricate the connection pipes from just after the cats. I'd maintain the stock (2.5') diameter and run duals straight out the back.
What gains (or losses) could I expect from something similar to this? I really don't want any appreciable low-end loss. What consideration should be given to muffler placement (front/rear) and shape/length/routing of the pipes connecting the cats to the muffler? How about sound over stock? What would be a fair price for an exhaust shop to do the work?
Any suggestions or advice are appreciated. Thanks!

That is what I would do if I wanted dual exhaust. Except I would order the mandrel bent tail pipes that Magnaflow sells for about $80 for both. It'll be much cheaper than the labor an exhaust shop would charge to custom make them, and these would fit exactly right.
$115 for the muffler
$80 for the tail pipes
$40 for more exhaust tubing from cats to new muffler
$60-100 labor/hangers
Sound will be deep, smooth, but mellow. Torque will probaby stay about the same, with an increase in power up top, say over 3000rpm if you have the 5.4L.
Muffler placement, put it where the tail pipes end so the shop doesn't have to make 2 sets of pipes.
BTW, this is what many Lightning people are doing essentially, except they have shorter pipes.

After looking at Bigexaust.com, the mandrel-bent tail pipes do seem like the way to go. A couple questions though: Do these allow for the spare tire to remain where it is (I have a 285/70/16 spare)? Also, since the parts are listed "for all V8 Models", I assume they're cut to length for the longest bed/cab option and you (or the exhaust shop) cut them to length for your specific vehicle?
First, I loaded this movie with Magnaflow exhaust sound last night onto my web space. It is a Lightning owner that basically has your proposed setup. The whine is the supercharger, but you should get an idea of what the exuast will sound like. I personally love it.
"97-01 V8, All Models 2.5" Diameter Mandrel-Bent Aluminized, Split Rear Exit C 12368 15020/15021"
All models to me means they are long enough to fit on extended cab long bed trucks, and can be cut shorter to fit on other configurations. I assumed the same as you.
The spare should stay in place, another reason why I recommend the pre-bent Magnaflow ones. I remember calling Magnaflow specifically about these pipes about a year ago when I was considering doing true dual. I thought the person I talked with said they were designed to keep the spare in place and I have the 265/70R17. 285/70R16 should be similar overall diameter. If unsure, I would contact Mike T as he has extensive knowledge on Magnaflow products. Or Magnaflow themselves.

Thanks, I LOVE that sound! Question: does the Lightning have a flat spot in the powerband (at about 10-11 seconds in the video), or did the guy just let off the throttle a little? ThHanks for the fast reply and help by the way.
tatesrus,
I can tell you that flat spot you hear is the annoying torque converter lock up. It really pisses me off that it locks up even under full throttle. It actually feels like a flat spot but on the tach you can see the RPM's drop. My truck does the same thing, even with the Superchip.

Thanks, WLF. I have had that video for a long time and wondered the same thing. I can honestly say I have never done a WOT 3-4 gear change. Actually, I'm pretty sure I hit the speed limiter in 3rd gear so I'd never notice that. Hmm, a superchip is what I need then...
When are you getting pictures of your exhaust, WLF?

I will try to get pictures up this weekend. I am also trying to find someone with a digital video so I can post a sound bite video with the exhaust at WOT.
That video you posted gets the point across but man that supercharger is noisy. I am probably going to supercharge (some day). I think I will go with a centrifugal charger. The roots style makes too much noise.
