I am looking to get a Magnaflow muffler for my '98 F150 5.4L V8.
I don't want to spend too much, so I was thinking of just replacing the OEM muffler with a Magnaflow one with turndowns.
Would this sound good? I don't want it as loud as flowmasters, but I would like something noticeable when I hit the gas and take off.
Which magnaflow would work well for what I need, I would like to limit my spendings to around $200

If you are willing to do the work yourself then check out this post. My entire system from the muffler back was just over $200. If you left off the stainless tips then it will get you in under budget. Check it out here:

Good choice, I run a Magnaflow and 3" system from the Cats back. I did notice a difference in low end power as well as through the RPM spectrum. Do a search in this forum for more data.

For an increase in power, I recommend having the shop cut off the factory Y-pipe and running two 2.5" pipes to a Magnaflow #14558 or #14221 for a little louder. Use one of those muflers backwards straight through allows reversable installation) with the a reducer to the stock stainless steel tail pipe. That should run about $200. Should step up the power throughout the engine speed range and more sound than stock. I don't recommend downturns. I don't know many people that liek them, and especially not good it you have a rear slider window.

I debated for weeks on magnaflow vs flowmaster 40 delta. All the postings sold me on magnaflow and the muffler shop tried to sell me on the flowmaster.
The shop temporarily installed both mufflers so I could hear them.
I still went with the Magnaflow SIDO with 2.5 in pipes out the side, stainless steel tips for $300 total job. The pipes where custom bent. The shop owner tried to tell me that the Magnaflow had zero back pressure, so the Flowmaster would be better for towing up hills. I did not kow who to believe.
The Magnaflow did not sound as loud the flowmaster, but still had a good deep growl.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS - I definately like the sound when I get on it. Low interior sound. I do notice a little better low end torque. I will let you know how it pulls trailer and an ATV.

Stay away from the Flowmasters. Anything without a straight-through design tends to take away horsepower, rather than gain any. The only reason Flowmaster does as well as they do is because of their marketing.
Magnaflows sound very nice! Personally, I've got a glasspack because I didn't have the option at the place I bought from. This summer I'm switching to a true dual setup.

Hi fellow 150 owners. I am a new super crew owner looking for some good advice and I'm sure this is the place to get it. I can get the magnaflow system installed at a local muffler shop for $375. However the installer will be using a Magnaflow muffler and his own custom bent aluminized pipes. It is a single in duel out the back with 2 1/2 pipes to 3 or 4 in. stainless tips. Do you need the mandrel bent pipes or is the difference negligible for the extra money. Does this sound like a fair price, or could I get the whole stainless setup and do the work myself for about the same price. Also I read in a test one time in one of the off road mags that a single 3 in. was better than duels. Something about the pipes not being equal lengths. Any comments on this? Also is there a certain Magnaflow muffler I should consider for more torque than top speed? My ride is a 2002 Screw with 5.4 engine , 3.55 rear and 17 in tires.

They are mandrel bent to fit exactly around the spare tire and look even. They only run about $80 for the pair which is less than a shop would charge for the labor and parts to make something up.
A Magnaflow SIDO muffler costs between $88 and $115. So, you have $200 in parts, plus the tips you want, and a good shop will charge $75-100 for the installation. You won't save a lot (with tips included, but you'll save the shop some headache of bening the pipes over the axle and around the spare and it'll probably look better.
Or, you can go the full system way. The benefit is the whole system is stainless steel and will last much longer than the aluminized pipes and proven performance increases. The possible downside is that it is single 3", not dual. It should cost a little bit more including shipping, but it is very easy to install in a driveway in about 30 minutes.

price seems high
I got the SI/DO magnaflow installed with SS tips on 2.5' pipes for $300 bucks. This is at a small muffler shop is Salem, VA.
The custom bent all the pipes and did not like the "kit" or mandrel bent pipes since most exhaust jobs are custom anyway.
I am very happy with my decision. Not too loud bur loud enough!
Wish I would have done it before 40k miles!!
