Header Paint

I picked up a set of Flow-tech headers for my 5.0L and wondering if anyone has experience with a quality hi-temp paint? Have a can of Plasti-kote 1500 deg paint. Apparently the paint that came on the headers is really just for shipping.

I've had good luck with Krylon Header Paint.

I've found Dupli-color and Plasti-kote, but haven't seen Krylon yet. How long has it lasted? I'm in Minnesota so salt spray will take it's toll! Figure anything less than like jet coating won't last more than a few years.

I used VHT on my roadsters headers and exhaust system - flat black - and it lasted quite well.
About 5 years in fact.
It started looking a little dingy in a couple of areas where the paint flaked off and a little oil was burned on.

I re-shot the headers with Dupli-Colors - flat black again - exhaust paint and it came out very nice.
A little flatter looking though and even more flat after fire-up.

I'll go back to VHT on the next one simply because the slight gloss looks better, but one thing I really like about Dupli-Color is that they have a very different spray nozzle on their aerosol paints.
The nozzle puts out a soft, well atomized and easily controlled spray.

Same nozzle is on the regular Dupli-Color paints.

I've been using their engine enamel - available in the basic colors - black for the most part for painting small parts on the new project.

I did paint a replacement Vega steering box on the old roadster with Dupli-Color black engine enamel - no primer - it's lasting very well and in fact looks as good as the other steering box that was powder coated black.

header paint

I have used bbq paint that I bought at Home Depot. Its in quart cans, so you can either brush or spray it on. It works very well and lasts a long time.

John, that looks like a good way to go.

Did you spray it or brush it on?

And if you sprayed it, what thinner is recommended?

I used BBQ paint on the system in my chevy powered Dodge Lancer.

I used the spray can stuff. It is holding up well for an old car.
