Question Aftermarket muffler with stock pipes

Anybody out there replaced only the muffler and kept the stock pipes? I was looking into getting a Flowmaster 40series put on but keeping the stock pipe for the time being, perhaps putting a SS tip to help with the looks. Wanting to do some outher mods and this can be done relatively low cost........just didn't know if the sound would be ALOT better just by changing the muffler.

2002 SCrew, 5.4 L, FX4, Silver(as if you couldn't tell that)........no major mods YET!!!!!

I know what your going through, I just bought a new 2002 supercab lariat 4x4 fx4 5.4 V8 and have done nothing to it yet.
I placed a new thread asking about exhaust systems(see DUEL EXHAUST on "engine")
I had a 1998 supercab 4.6 V8 and got glass packs put on and left the stock pipes. I want to do a little more to my new ride.

GOOD LUCK!!

So Beastie.......how did the Flowmaster 40 sound with just the factory pipes? Would you recommend going ahead for the duals?

Since i have an older truck i only have 2 cats but this is what my truck sounds like. At idle it is not any louder than stock. When I,m cruising at about 1600 rpms it is very deep and can be heard in the cab, but i like that ... not so loaud that you cant hear music if i turn up the radio I cant hear the exhaust. When I step on it is sounds like a jet taking off it is just like its pushing so much exhaust out that its a turbine, I want to do the duals just so that I can get my truck to sound like some of the 5.0 stangs when I'm at a stop I want to hear it rumbling a little

Well I bit the bullet today and got the Flowmaster 40 SI/DO with duals put on (much to my wifes dismay), but it sounds damn good. I'm glad now that I went ahead with the duals. Now to see what i can manage to do next.....K&N FIPK or Superchip....I guess I'll do a little here and there.

Hey qwkslver,

I have the same p/u you do except mine is an ext.cab. I will be installing an exhaust system a.s.a.p. Did you get true duels or just single inlet/duel outlet on the flowmaster. I've been told not to get a true duel system by a muffler guy because it will void the warranty(something to do with the sensors), and the service manager at my local ford dealership told me it would'nt void the warranty???

I want to go with true duels but i'm not sure if I even need to(maybe the performance will be good enough with a single inlet/duel outlet muffler).

any suggestions from anyone would be great!!

I did not go true duel, it is a SI/DO and is all the rumble/sound I was looking for........not tooo loud, but loud enough to turn heads and do the 5.4 justice. Can't recommend because everybody has a different sound they are looking for, and what I think sounds good may not be loud enough for you. I will say I didn't know what mine would sound like because the guy that did mine said the 4 cat converters sometime make a difference....was leaning towards the 50 series until he told me that....so it was a shot in the dark really, but I'm very pleased.

Good luck with selecting yours......

Thanks for your input. I believe I will install something very similar to your set up. I too do not wish it be very loud but have a nice rumble.

By the way if you or anyone else is interested. I found a hitch insert brake light that lights up the ford emblem. It hooks into the trailer lights wiring connection. pretty cool. I located it on ebay then found it at pep boys auto parts for $19.95.

maybe this will help?

whatever y'all do, dont switch to a true dual if you have 2 cats. the exhaust will flow right past the o2 sensors, and it will not read it correctly. then your computer will try to compensate for the incorrect readings from the exhaust - so unless you want about 7 mpg and horrible acceleration....dont go to a true dual. i put the 40 series, 1 in 2 out muffler and it is the loudest they make, except for the 70 and 80, which are only for the high performance cars. i know you just got it put on, but after about 6 months, your muffler will "hit puberty". it's "voice" slowly gets deeper and throatier. you will really like it.
