opinion on aftermarket exhaust

What would you recommend for a catback exhaust system, i would like to spend under $500. I would like dual rear, but will my spare tire get in the way? Any help would be apprciated.

Almost anything will due. I have a flowmaster and like it. Some like thier Gibson's, some like borla, bassani, magnaflow, etc... I just went to the exhaust shop and he orderd all my stuff and installed everything. I went with the Flowmaster 50, SI/DO that exited out the side in front of the tire, with stainless steel tips. You should be able to go around your spare, if a kit wont, you could just have your exhaust guy make new bends to go around it.

my original setup was with Flowmaster Force 2 catback system going out the rear. The pipes do not interfere with the spare.
Currently I still have the rear pipes out the rear, but they are attached to single in dual out Magnaflow that has magnaflow free flow converters in front of it, and long tube headers in front of the cats.

I have the stock side exit in front of the tire and thats the worst thing ever engineered. I live in the north where the weather is cold for most of the year and the clear coat is coming off my rim behind the exhaust from the frost build up. Its all bubbled and peeling. Looks horrible. I hoped there was a recall on it but i guess not. Thats why i want rear side, or dual rear. But thanks for the info......

Thumbs up

Try to find a local independent muffler shop that's NOT one of the "Chain Store" types. They'll usually have "Flowmaster" or "Dynomax" banners in the windows. These are the ones who install complete custom setups and bend their own pipes. Those "others" just swap out mufflers and OEM pipes at the most.

They should be able to come up with a system in your price range. If they really do know exhausts, they should be able to hook you up with a pretty decent system.

There is a TSB on the 97 exhaust. Ford will relocate the tailpipe for you. You have to still be under fact. warranty. You're better off with a good cat-back.

After reading over this and other forums on the exhuast subject for the last week, I took my 10 day old 4.6 supercab into a local shop today and went with a Flowmaster 40 series SI/DO system with duals straight out the back. The muffler guy had no trouble making the pipes clear the spare tire and the trailier hitch and wiring outlets.

The muffler, new 2.25" tailpipes, 3" stainless tips and all labor came to $385.00. That is probably more than a lot of you have to pay, but I live in the SF bay area, where everything costs more than it should. LOVE the new sound and performance though.

sounds nice, you will have to get some pictures up. From what I have seen, the stainless tips arent on vehicles as much as I thought, only a few. I like mine, easy to clean

I think the flows will lusten up some, so they might increase in noise, especially at idle after a few miles.

I remember the first time I heard mine, I thought it was a little loud, but now I love it. The drive home was about 15 miles, and that noise seemed strange, for I hadn't really experienced anything like it before.

I say Flowmaster Gibson or Borla would be your best bet.
