Gibson Warranty

My Gibson catback is almost 4 years old and the muffler has a loose baffle inside. Initially my thought was that this system has a lifetime warranty and that they would replace the muffler. I contacted Gibsonand they told me that if the baffle let go due to rust that I'm on my own. I'm not terribly pleased as this was a very expensive system and I was under the assumption that I would have no headaches with this setup because it was built so heavyily and supposedly had a "lifetime " warranty. I'm sure the stock muffler would have outlasted this one. Has anyone else had this experience?

Gibson puts a limited LIFETIME warranty on all their mufflers and cat-back systems. Since your's only lasted 4 years, I'd call them back and tell them if they did'nt replace your muffler you are going to call the better business bureau and file a complaint against them for false advertisment. If a company(Gibson) put a lifetime warranty on their prouct, they should back it up! What they told you is bull!! They are false advertising!

Wolverine, Actually their warranty is explained in great detail on their website and interior rust is not covered. It is a "Limited" Lifetime warranty with the emphasis on limited. I wrongly made the assumption that this thing was covered as long as I owned the truck. Its funny, there are mufflers that are a fraction of the cost of a Gibson that are truly covered as long as you own the vehicle. Anyway, the loose baffle is not that big of a deal and the only time I notice it is when I back out of my garage. When it finally craps out, I'll replace it with a Spin Tech.

Sorry for the rant. But I was getting ready to buy a Gibson Sweptside, and this thread has changed my mind a little. There is alot of water condensation coming out of my exhaust pipes all of the time. And if I get the Gibson SS, I don't think it would last very long. Have you ever heard of Jardine Cat-back exhausts? I've been trying to find out where to buy one, and I'm not having any luck. Can anyone shed a little light on the subject???

Well, To be honest, I probably wouldn't have had any better luck with other systems on the market. Gibson is built heavier than most. You would probably have better luck due to your nicer climate. Also, you could pop for the Gibson stainless steel model.
That's not to say that this endorsement of Gibson means I'm happy with their policy, but that in relative terms their stuff appears to be built as good or better than anything on the market. Very few systems are built with 14 gauge steel as Gibson is. Anyway, I'll stop now before I contradict myself any further.

it depends which system you bought. if it was stainless steel...then they should be obligated. if it is aluminzed they are not. check this out, this is from the little warranty thing when i bought my super truck:

WHAT VOIDS OUR LIFETIME WARRANTY
(there is a long list. lol. but this is the bullet that is related to your problem)
"- internal rust, external visual rust, rust through or corrosion EXCEPT ON STAINLESS STEEL PRODUCTS.

so as you can see, if you have a stainless steal system...you are covered for rust. if you have aluminzed...then you are your own. just trying to help.

I see your point LBC150. I'll check out the stainless steel version of the Sweptside when my Gibson catalog comes in the mail. I did not know they made a Stainless Sweptside until I read your thread. That put's my mind at ease for now, or at least until I see the price! J/K!

On my '95 a stainless sideswept was about $400.

Since the main concern is with the muffler itself, not the rest of the tubing, you might want to call Gibson. It may be possible to order a stainless muffler with regular aluminized tubes. I think the regular aluminized system is around $275.

Angry gibson

I installed a Gibson alum catback on my 1999 4x4 when I bought it new. After about 2 years a baffle broke inside & was rattling most of the time - drove me nuts. I called Gibson and ask about replacement & all the did was try to sell me an "upgrade to Stainless steel". I would expect a system to last for more than a couple of years especially if it is a known problem that the manufactor could fix if desogned & built properly. Instead they add fine print to their warrenty and take advantage of the flaw to market other products - no thanks. I had the Gibson cut off & went with a SI/DO flowmaster 50 series with pipes straigt out the back. Looks & sounds better & was the about same price as I paid for the Gibson system. No more Gibson products for me.

Warranty Problem's

Sorry to hear about the Gibson fiasco'. That is the reason I didn't go with a Gibson Exhaust.

Maybe try a Dynomax Super Turbo system. I've have had nothing but enjoyment from my two Super Turbo systems. ('95 F150 and '93 GMC)
