Newbie Exhaust Question
I have spoken with 3 different mechanics in my local area about putting an exhaust on my 4.6L Triton V8 and all of them said the same thing "Don't do it, putting an exhaust on will lessen the life span of your engine." WTF? Is this true? Or are they just not that bright. From what I understand putting an exhaust on a truck is a good thing, better flow, better sound, more reliability, and more power. So I have $600 saved up to put this thing on I looking at a 2.5" true dual exhaust side piped under the back passenger flareside fender will a 3" tip. I think it will look and sound pretty hot but I don't want to mess up my reliability. So do I do this modification or not? I have the cash and I'm ready to go. Also I should have some extra cash for an intake, is there anybody that sell an aftermarket CAI for my ride? Thanks.
I'm very sorry mods. After looking at your site I realized that this post should be in the after market exhaust fourm. If you can please move this post that would be much appreciated so I don't double post. Thanks. And I you which to respond to the post please do.
Wow,
I have never heard that before. According to the muffler shop, an aftermarket exhaust, if done correctly, will extend the life of engine components. Freer flow results in less wear on the components. I got my exhaust on my truck when it only had 1000 miles. I am now at close to 12000 with no problems, at all. Most of the members of this forum also have aftermarket exhausts and have reported no problems.
I would shy away from true duals. I have heard the extreme loss of backpressure that this kind of system would provide causes the O2 sensors to go crazy, resulting in an emissions problem. This is according to the muffler shop I dealt with. Any of you with true duals have this problem.
I have a SI/DO flowmaster with chrome tips out the back and I love it. Heck, I have a 50 series. If you did the same with a 40 series, it would be really loud....I am assuming that is why you want true duals...

I agree with Max... I am sure there are more reputable shops around your town. You might want to try and ask some people you see around town where they got their's done. I did this and came up with many recommendations for one place and a whole bunch of people telling me not to go to another place....
Sounds like the guys you talked with were either backed up with work and didn't want to help you, or they are dumb. The latter is my suspicion...

when you get your true dual system on, make sure to use an X-pipe (instead of an H-pipe). It may be a few $$ more, but for the HP and Torque gain it will be worth it.
kinda crappy link about X-pipes vs H-pipe
Also, if you haven't already done so, do the airbox mod or get a K&N type kit. Reset your ECU too.

My ? is this why would you have to reset the computer when just changing out an exhaust system I never been able to figure that one out after all it is just an exhaust system not a computer chip or some other electrical device being added or changed out.
It helps to clear out the old ECU program. It will default to the original program and continue to make minor adjustments to make up for the freer flowing exhaust or intake....or any other engine mod, for that matter. You can survive without resetting the ECU, but it will take longer for the ECU to pin down a correct set of values.....
