Question 40 or 50 Series? Can't decide...

Hello... I want to add new exhaust to my 99 Lariat 5.4. On my last truck I had Gibson supertruck that exited in front of the rear wheel. This time I want something that has about the same volume or a tad more but exits in the rear.

I am looking at the 40 and 50 series Flowmasters. I don't want to lose any power.

Should I use 2.5 or 3in pipe?

Which series has about the same or a little louder sound as the supertruck???

Thanks for the help.

(I'll get some pics up as soon as I take some... only had it for a month)

I've never heard the Supertruck, but if you don't want anything much louder than that, I would say go with the 50 series. I have a si/do 40 series with 2.5" tailpipes straight out to 4 or 5" tips (can't remember). It definetly is not obnoxiosly loud, but it's much quiter now than it was when I was running a si/do glass pack. Put it this way - people can hear me coming. 50 series will still sound good when you are getting on it, but with less droan and grunt at lower rpms. By the way....I love my 40 series!!!!

I asked the Muffler shop the same question yesterday while my son's flowmaster was being installed since I have a 5.4 litre Lariat. He recommended the same thing as what was being put on my son's V6. See also the post called V6 dual exhaust. Here is what was recommended.

1) Flowmaster 40 series - delta flow - single in dual out -dual chamber muffler.

2) Pipe is 3" short piece in and 2 1/4" dual tailpipes straight out the rear to each side of the spare tire.

3) 22 inch tips - 3 1/2 inch diameter

the 50 series will be a little quieter than the 40 series. i have true duals on my 97 with a 4.6 turned down right in front of the axel. i love the sound and wouldnt change a thing bout mine. it has an aggressive tone but not too loud and no popping like i used to have when i had straight pipes and let off the gas. i also have headers so it changes the tone a little. but if i was thinkin about a flowmaster i would use the 40 series any day of the week

i have a 40 and it sounds great but i like straights better. i you go with the 3 in pipe you will lose some of your low end power but it will be a littler louder

40 series = louder than 50 series.

If you want more sound, go 40 series. I dont have any first hand experience with Flowmaster (I have Gibson) but when I spoke to a Flowmaster rep (and all the research I did on the Flowmaster web site) I learned that the 40 series is their loudest, "most aggressive" sounding muffler.

I went for a 50, but they only had a 40.

Damn I'm glad, because the 40 is the exact sound I was hoping for. Deep sounding, no drone, loud enough to hear but not too loud to be a nuisance.

Probably my best mod.

Ohh why not just go with the 30 series Far as size, stay with 2.5" if your doing tru duals from the manifolds back. If you want a SI/DO then go with 3".

I've got the 50-series with dual 2.5's out and a single 3 in, while a buddy of mine has a jeep grand-cherokee w/ a 318 and the single 3 in/3 out that you're referring to, and the 50 series is a small bit quieter... if you want something louder, go with the 40-series. Now about tips... I guess its a matter of preference, but personally, I dont like them... they dont add any performance and you lose ground clearance behind the axle... just my $.02 worth.

Ruune: I like your comment about exhaust tips. I always LOL when I see a huge exhaust pipe tip and a dinky little pipe coming off the tip. You don't even have to really bend down to look under a truck to see the setup. Go 3inch all the way or don't bother.

Kind of reminds me of those rice rockets with 6" tip and 1/2inch water line exhaust supplying the tip! Ha ha ha. Usually they have a giant wing too.... I call'em "shopping carts".

I haven't done my exhaust yet but going to go with y-pipe and 3inch sweptside. No tip!

You have the setup I'm thinking about, did you get better mpg? Did you lose low end, I also wonder if that setup is better than true duals? let me know thanks.
