Gibson Mufflers, Rust Thru

We have 3 Gibson Systems, however we have been disappointed with the mufflers rusting thru long before the pipes. All 3 trucks are highway miles, so water, driving style, and weather here in the south is not a factor. The pipes are in fine shape.

Our last Gibson SS system, the muffler started to rust out down the bottom seam in as little as 8 months. I have another one that the muffler has about a 4 inches rusted out in the bottom seam, and about 3 inches across (about halfway down, not in the rear bottom or where you would think water would collect) Both have rusted out where the 3" in pipe ends inside the muffler. All systems are aluminum. Again, these are highway miles, some as many as 40k a year or more.

We are pleased with the performance and sound and the ease of installation, but has anyone else had trouble with early rust thru?

stainless or alum/steel

Just wondering if you've got the stainless or aluminized steel? If stainless, they should warranty it. If alum/steel, perhaps spending a few extra $$ for the stainless would be worth it. Probably would pay for itself in muffler changes.

Natty,

In the post he states that the systems are aluminum. However, here in Alabama that should not matter. Aluminum mufflers on trucks run on the highway should last longer than 8 months. The factory muffler on my 92 ranger was 7years old before it got its first rust hole and wasn't changed until last year. It took another year after the muffler started to rust for it to develop a large hole. I drive about 45 miles on way to work everyday so if he is running 40k highway miles a year our results should be similar.

Oops, sorry 'bout that. Don't know how but I missed the part about them being aluminum. And yes, I agree they should last way longer than 8 months even in an area with harsh winters and plenty of road salt.

Mastercraft,
Have you contacted Gibson on these? The warranty should be at least one year...I know it is on Flowmaster. Gibson should make good. If not, I would look elsewhere for a replacement muffler.

When I was researching exhausts I spoke to a fcatory Flowmaster rep and asked about the warranty. He said it is one year but they've often extended it to 3 years for "good will".

Good luck! Let us know if you talk to Gibson and what they say.

Have not noticed any rust on mine yet (alum). ~ 8 months old and about 18k on it since I got the Gibson.

What I don't understand is how you expect to get Gibson, or any manufacturer to replace your muffler without first, taking yours off and sending it to them? Then you have to wait for them to determine IF they will even warranty it, then send it back. So, what do you do in the mean time? This could take weeks!

It seems odd that water could still be in your muffler after running it for so long each day. I've noticed that the muffler (and pipe) are very, very hot. Even after running for only a few minutes.

Is the mufflers "outlet" pipe on the top or bottom? If it's on the top, that may explain why all the water is not leaving the muffler.

Mine is on the bottom, so there is no chance for it to pool up due to gravity...... Just a thought. I don't think the system will fit, if it's on top anyway?

Maybe the best thing to do is just get the muffler and install done at a local shop. At least that way, you can take it back and they can replace the muffler right there on the spot.

Mufflers rust from the inside first. I would suggest the s.s. mufflers for the simply reason it will be the last one you would have to buy. Borla claims a million miles but that is a little unrealistic as far as the vehicle is concerned. But they will stand behind them. If you are looking for a warranty on your Gibsons, I would call them, make arrangemrnts to purchase another with the understanding that that you want to send one in under warranty. If they won't go for that then there are plenty of other manufactures out there!
Good luck.

That's why you should always use true stainless. Um.. about the pricetag.. $110 for a tip?? Say what?? Sure, put it on.
