flowmaster Y and new exaust
Hi Folks,
I just got the film back from getting my new exaust installed, I put on Magnaflows SI/DO with stainless tips. I am generally pleased no drone, didn't loose any bottom end that I can tell, (do wish it was a little louder) The "Significnat Other" thinks it is perfect.. I am holding out hope as it breaks in it will pick up some more volume...
I know that when I was trying to figure what people ment by the flowmaster Y pipe, I had a hard time visualizing what folks were talking about. and even less what it would look like installed. Well anyway I impossed on the shop to let me take some pictures as things progressed, ('
')
I though that others like I was when I started out might find will find these pics helpful.
Here is the link to the install pics...

Knowing that exhaust shops rarily, if ever, have mandrel bent pieces on hand, I took a 90 degree mandrel bent pipe from J.C.Whitney in with my Y-pipe (for the driver's side re-angle). It was the best $9.50 that I've spent lately. I've seen 5 or so different pictures of these setups posted here now, and I really like the pipe clamped on the passenger's side; like this setup.
No one around here does mandrel bending, I would agree it would have been better with mandrel bent pipes, however compairing what I had prior to this it is still an improvment. The ford Y had only a 1.75 inch opening from the drivers side into the passenger side Y ait also had a lip that would cause eddys...
The new pipe is 2.5" and even if the bends caused a 20% restriction I have
would still be gaining about .75" in area or about 14%. if it is less then 20% the gain will be higher...
Also optimum pipe dia for the 4.6 with the normal HP we see is a 2" pipes per side so the handy calulator says, so I don't beleive it will be a major restriction... In any case an improvment is an improvment... would mandrel bent pipes be better yes I agree but he did the best with what we had...
A second consideration I have is ground clearence as this truck goes off road for hunting season come round and logginf trails are pretty rough on anything below the frame... so we needed to keep the system up and inside the frame when possable...

I agree with you, I think your setup looks good. I was only commenting in general for those that have high flow needs and HP dreams.

I learn something new every time I read these threads. And I just learned something really important just before I install my new Cat-Back Exhaust System.
Max Mitchell ... you're a jewel !!! That suggestion to have the 90-degree mandrel bent pipe with you when you show up at the muffler shop is a great idea. Thanks Max!
I had my muffler man order in my new MangnaFlow parts from the local distributor ahead of time. He has them in hand and I got to look them over yesterday. The MagnaFlow 'Y-Pipe' is part No. 10778. It has two 2.5" inlets and one 3" outlet. I am going to take Max's idea to provide my own 90-degree mandrel bent pipe from the driver's side for him to use. The MagnaFlow Muffler I opted for, Part No. 12228, is a straight-through style muffler. For zero restriction, it is 3" inlet and two 2.25 outlets for dual exhausts. I am running my pipes out under the rear bumper and welding on some outrageous Mirror-Polished Stainless Steel Dual Tips.
The only hang up now is my muffler man wants me to lower the truck before he installs the mufflers/pipes. That makes sense to me. So, I have time to order that 90-degree mandrel-bent pipe from good 'ol JCW.
Thanks again Max for that tip!!! Love it!!

I would have gone one step further and ordered a complete cat-back system, that way the tail pipes are mandrel bent. Once 2 1/4" tubing goes through the ram bender, especially the up and over the axle, the interior diameter will be anywhere from 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 inches. I've been there, done that with 2 1/4" tubing. Never again.
