My F150 is a V6.
But I feel like it could sound pretty cool still if I put a different muffler on it. Say a Cherry Bomb or a Borla cat back exhaust. The Borla is for sale locally. Person wants like $380 for it. They say “it’ll bolt right on” and it was a limited run? I’m not sure so that’s why I’m here asking.
thoughts about this on a V6? Have you done it already? Is it hard to do by yourself? Meaning are maybe some of the parts really heavy?

 

What I did on mine is take it to a local muffler shop, they installed a single in dual out glasspack and custom bent dual tailpipes exiting in the stock location each side - behind the rear wheels but not straight out the back. That would cost you less than the Borla. Just a cherry bomb keeping the single exhaust would sound kinda nasty, I had that before I went to the duals.

Take it to a muffler shop. Doing it yourself is possible but it won't be very secure, exhaust systems are all welded these days. The parts aren't heavy but they are a hassle to work with.

A few weeks ago I just got done replacing an entire exhaust system (from back of cat, mid-pipe and muffler) on a Ford Fiesta. Out of everything, the welding was the most time consuming because of the crazy angles I had to get at.

If you do attempt it yourself, having a helper is best.

 

On a 2004 -2008 truck, there's just no value in spending $500 - $1,000 on a new exhaust system. I would have spent it 10 or 15 years ago, when the truck was new.

Easiest thing to do, and you will get a different note, is cut off the OEM muffler. Then replace it with a glasspack muffler. On a 4.2 V6, no exhaust system will give you a performance gain.
