California and Cats
Hey folks, I'm new here because I recently picked up a used 1997 F-150 Lariat supercab with a 4.6L and I'm getting a quick education on the truck. The previous owners treated this poor truck like a bastard stepchild, and I'm trying to make things right again! Fixed lots of easy things, got stuff working that they obviously didn't know how to fix or more likely didn't want to get their hands dirty! I've got lots to do still, but my question is about the 4 catalytic converters and what the options for cutting down to 2 instead, but the big issue is being in California! Is there an option to go from 4 smaller stock cats to 2 larger cats and still be CARB compliant? I also have a 401 code to deal with, but plan to pull the throttle body and related EGR components and dig out the carbon because this truck has over 220K miles on it and if the previous owners didn't have the where-with-all to replace a master power window switch, they sure didn't even try to fix the EGR issue! I did an under vehicle inspection on a local lift and noticed the color of all 4 cats was more reddish in color than I like, especially since I'll have to pass a smog test in order to get the registration taken care of. Any direction on the cats issue wold be greatly appreciated!
You can't go to 2 cats. Not allowed. I know a lot about the CA smog stuff because of a 1996 OBD2 Dodge B2500 conversion van I had.
Why are you trying to go to less cats?
They really are not a restriction contrary to what most people heard back in the day.
Lmk if you have more questions or concerns.
Replacements even come down to the issue of having an approval number on the part. And if it doesn't match what CA allows, automatic smog fail for tampering.
I will say, the CA smog program is a scam. But what else is to be expected from the libtards out here.

The link that glc posted is about as inexpensive as you will find anywhere. Also most suppliers will not/can't ship non carb compliant cats to a Calif. address, it sucks. It is going to cost 50% to 100% more for cats here in Cali just to satisfy tha commie bastages in Sacramento.......just how it is!
BTW thank you for your service!
