Thumbs up NO-Y Exhaust Yields 2 Surprises

Basically what I did was have the old pipes cut after the cats but ahead of the Y. Then I got a Manaflow single 3" in / dual 2.5" out and had it put in backwards. So now the muffler acts as the collector. This is a "straight through" type muffler (somebody with a smaller hand than me could put their fist right through it). Now the new single 3" outlet pipe goes back a couple of feet, makes a right turn and exits in front of the passenger side wheel. There is no special tip, just a bevel cut in the plane of the body panel. Kind of like ½ of a lightning outlet. The whole thing was $219 installed after tax.

I've had the new system in for about 200 miles now and it's working better than I expected.

The first surprise is how quiet it is! Looking at this set up I thought I would be breaking windows from the noise. But all I hear is a kind of low vooooom.

The second surprise was the low to mid-range power gain. I thought this would be an all top end set up. The biggest gain was in the 1500 to 2500 rpm range! I don't have to down-shift as much as with the stock system. I passed 2 semis today in 4th. I never thought of passing anybody without dropping to 3rd with the stock set up! I expect the top end will show up when I put on the Airraid.

I'll let you all know what the gas mileage does after I run a few tanks through.

That's a very interesting way of doing the exhaust! I have always been a fan of how the Magnaflows sound, loud enough to know it's there without being obnoxious. A member here named Flats Man has the same setup (in reverse),and it sounds REAL nice. From all the cutaway pics I have seen it does seem as if they could be used either way without any problems. Let us know the mileage #'s when you get a chance,,,,,,98

PS: Keep your lug cover polished, they have a tendency to turn green after awhile

I just finished the first tank of gas with the new exhaust. I got 17.5 mpg which isn't bad since I usually get 15.5 to 17.5 depending on where and how I drive. Actually that's especially good considering the amount of time I spent at WOT "trying out" the new system. This weekend I'm going on a 700 mile road trip so I'll get some highway numbers.

I think the computer is adjusting for the increased flow and the packing is breaking in. The small amount of resonance I had in the cab is gone and the little bit of growl has turned into a low moan. I'ts really kind of a weird sounding exhaust.

The mileage resultes from my trip to Iowa are in... No real change. I used to get 18.5 to 20.5 mpg on "all highway" trips. This weekend I got 19.8.

Oh well, I do really like the improvement in the low-mid range torque.
