My brother has a '97 7.3L Powerstroke and the only time I've ever seen it roll coal is when we put an Edge tuner on it. It's got a TS performance six-position chip amongst other things and loves to drink the fuel as well.

12V's are a lot harder to squeeze that kind of power out of it.

I love rollin coal, but I'd never do it to a diesel I own myself, nit unless I've just to cash to blow.
