Four Catalytic Converters?

Lightbulb Four Catalytic Converters?

Ok, since the question wasen't answered, it got mixed up with the rest of the post...

Question is, has anyone run 4 cats? I was thinking of a set-up where I'd keep both oem cats and run two more, parallel to the existing ones. This would mean, a single pipe from the headers splitting to two cats, joining back to a single pipe to go to a muffler for each side. Total would be two mufflers and four cats.

Is this "Cleaner", is it more efficient?

These rigs already have 4 cats. I must not be understanding your question.

They run two on each side. One in front of the other. Not really sure why, but that's what the Mustang GTs did/do too.

The 5.4's have 4 cats. The ones up front nearest the exhaust manifold are called "pre-heaters". The catalyst reaction is activated by heat, so if you move the converters to far downstream there too "cold" to do any good. If you put to much heat into them (IE long-tube ceramic coated headers) they will fail prematurely.

If your state has stringent anti-SMOG requirements, be very careful changing the OEM converter location and that would also include the location of the o2 sensors. Ford must honor fixing defective cats, PCMs or other onboard diagnostic equipment, up to 80,000 miles. If you change these locations that warrantee would no longer apply.
It is very difficult after 36,000 miles to get cooperation from a dealer, but when the state forces these requirements, you have leverage to get it done.

Makes sense. I also didn't notice that he has the 4.2L. Didn't know they only have two cats.

I guess I still don't understand why you would want to add additional cats in the first place.

Yeah, that must be it. I have the 4.2 and in looking, I only have one "unit" on each side. it's just one cat per side, total of two, no pre-cats.

My goal is that by summer of '02, I will get the autonet Supercharging kit. My thinking was that with the greater amount of gasses flowing through the engine, it could probably use to free up the exaust system a bit more. The thought was that by having two cats on each side, in parallel with each other (not on the same pipe/in line with each other) would allow for a greater flow.

The question was if anyone could support or deny my theory and if anyone (supercharged or not) has tried this set-up?

Basically, in summary, I would be looking to double the system. question is, would it give better flow and be "clean"?
