Keep the CAI or GOTTS mod

Ok I got more questions for you guys. I'm kinda afriad if what I've been reading all over here, that CAI are bad for a stock tuned truck. I'm afriad I may have jumped the gun buying a s&b unit and installing it with out knowledge of needing a tune to correct the problem of running lean. My question is should I go back to the OEM stuff with a GOTTS mod until I get a custom tune or just stick it out with the cold air unit I have

Hi.

Go back. You cannot always detect a lean condition without instrumentation ( CEL is not always set ). This issue is a function of the slot-style MAF and how the venturi is an integral part of the intake tubing. And it affects ALL years with said MAF design, not just '04, '05.

Please note, though, that even with a corrective tune, the CAI will not net much in the way of gains. Mostly sound and looks ( and I do like the looks of those ). ALL the tangible gains will be due to the tuning itself, so it's worth it regardless.

Most enlightened folks skip the CAI expense, do the Gotts, and invest the money saved into a quality custom programmer. SCT recommended.

However, if you've got the scratch to do both for appearance and some growl, go for it.

If you're worried about it at all, just go to the Gotts mod and set your mind at ease.

Ok thanks guys! I think I might put my S&B back into the box until I get that custom tune. I really wish I would have found this site before jumping right into things with this truck. as a first time ford owner I had no idea that these trucks ran lean right from the get go. later on down the road im thinking of getting the PHP custom 87 octane perf tune corrected for the intake on a Gryphon. heard pretty good things about them. SO as It sounds ill stick with the GOTTS as long as I have a stock tune after that its all S&B.
Thanks again guys!

The CAI works great with functional ram air as well. I have a custom tune to comp for throttle body, CAI, injectors, Cam's, headers. Depending on what your gonna do I would try to do a bunch over a weekend so the program can handle more that just one thing. Plan ahead to get ahead. With some good mods and program you can awake the beast under the hood and by some new tires for your efforts.

I just went back to the stock system for now, still lookin for the supplies to actually do the gotts mod. money is tight now but the next step will prob be the tune and reinstall of my CAI. other than that, as of now that is, that's the plan I have for this truck. just a good exhaust a CAI and a tune.
