2001 F-150 4.6l Identify this Hose

2001 F-150 4.6l Identify this Hose

Long time lurker. I want to thank you all for the help that you didnt know that you have provided me in the past.

But today. Ive had a rough idle, thought it was a bad coil at first. but, i read a p0174 & p0171. Upon investigation, ive found that the hose circled in read is slit wide open. I tried pinching it with a pair of pliers, and it all but solved the rough idle problem.

So, i need to replace the hose. But i don't know what it is. Can i just replace it with rubber tubing? Or do i need to buy the specific line?

That's the brake booster vacuum hose. You can replace it with standard hose, but be very careful removing it from that green plastic check valve.

Thanks for the reply glc. The hose is so brittle/rotten, i should be able to just cut it off the check valve.
Im hoping that replacing it solves the issue.

DO NOT REPLACE with standard vacuum hose . Booster hose is reinforced so not to collapse under high manifold vacuum causing a loss of assisted braking. It is available at most any auto supply, you just have to be specific about what you want.

Thanks for the post.

I swapped it out with gas line. Which is pretty thick to begin with.

Suppose i should replace it again with reinforced hose?

Yes you should replace with the proper stuff. It is not so much the thickness of the hose but the braided reinforcement in the hose . The fuel line will eventually collapse. If you have'nt guessed from my log in ,shopteach, I teach auto and am a dual ASE master certified tech so I have seen this before.

Doesn't the booster vacuum hose come off the booster itself? Out on a limb here but that looks like the hose that provides vacuum to the canister purge valve...
Could still be your culprit though.

If it is the canister purge line, gas hose is fine.

replacing it with gas line 100% cured my idling issue. So the cracked hose was certainly the culprit. Havent done any towing or anything else yet, but.
If its not much $, ill just grab a booster hose next time im over at the auto-parts store, just to be safe.

Does that hose connect to the booster through that check valve, or does it go to the purge valve? Can't really tell from the pic.

I see that you have the accel coils, do you feel a difference? Or is there other stuff you have to buy

We don't recommend Accel COP's, we recommend Motorcraft or Visteon.

I swapped it out with booster hose anyways, just to be safe. Drove 1000 miles to FL round trip last week, and it ran perfectly.

Coils: I went ahead and replaced all 8 @ 120k miles just to avoid having to change them 1 by one as they went bad. Someone with allot of 4.6/5.4 knowledge recommended the accel coils. So i just went with his suggestion. Haven't noticed any change at all.
