I am wanting to upgrade the exhaust on my '99 F150 Flareside. I've had the truck for about 3 weeks and my son is the primary driver so I am not looking to add HP just make it sound better. I've decided to go with a muffler swap only instead of performance cat-back system. I have an old Camaro that has true dual Flowmaster 40 series Delta Flows and no cats. I want the truck to be a quieter than the Camaro but still sound like it has more than the factory set-up. The shop suggest a single 40 series FM Delta Flow with the factory cats and says it will not be nearly as loud as the Camaro. Is this the way I should go. My son is paying for the exhaust so the $100 vs. $300 is a BIG difference to him.

 

Don't make your son's truck sound like a whimp he will get made fun of. Just go in have them take out the stock muffler, add a Y-Pipe and two nice chrome tips. This way your son will have a man's truck and not a little girls wagon.

 

Thats all I did, a muffler change. I went with a spin tech, its all 304 stainless and has lifetime warrantee. sound great, no loss in bottom end. deep throaty sound, not loud, but more than stock. ever slight drone at 1700, only when your on it, not while cruising.

 

The muffler only is the perfect way to change the sound. It will also include a nice performance increase too; the stock muffler is low-flow. When picking your sound on these trucks, remember that the multi-cat setup lowers the overall muffler sound. The FM DF 40 has a nice sound, but I would recommend buying a stainless steel muffler since the rest of the system is stainless and taking it with you to the shop.

 

Hey Greg, I did the same thing delta flow 40 si, so used stock tailpipe. I love it has sort of a stock mustang gt sound. price was about 95.00 hope this helps

A 40 series Flowmaster should be fine. The cats do a good job of quieting the exhaust so it won't be *too* obnoxious. Be sure to add some echo tips for sound as well as looks.

If you want more noise than that, ditch the muffler altogether and just run the Y pipe out to duals. It's not that much louder than a performance muffler and sounds great. Now when you ditch the mufflers AND the cats, the sound is way too loud IMO. Lots of popping and crackling and downright nasty sounding.

just the air silencer removed, 3" inlet tube at fender and the flowmaster deltaflow 40 now it sounds good at both ends!

Who did your FM 40 installation? I was thinking about having Klein's Muffler Shoppe, on Dedeaux Road do my work for me.

Have you heard anything about his Workmanship? Looks to have a good, professional, and clean Shop.

I live near the Airport... So, Klein's does good work? I still haven't had the chance to get away from work early, and stop by to talk with him in person.

Have you noticed any difference in low end torque, since the muffler swap? I am looking at a Heavy Duty Dynomax muffler. It is suppose to flow 425cfm.

I also replaced the stock muffler with a Flowmaster 50 series. I think it is loud enough, a 40 might be a little too much for me. There is a slight drone around 60 or if you step on it. But its a good sound. My wife never compalins about it, amazingly.

Open up the frontend with a K&N airbox mod for sure. Maximize the performance you can get by adding the muffler. The K&N mod only costs $50!

 

I also did a muffler only change. I went with a 50 series, but didn't keep the tailpipe. I used a piece of 45 degree pipe as a turn-down and tossed the tailpipe. It's not at all too loud, and a turn-down is going to be noisier than dumping the exhaust to the side or back of the truck through a tailpipe. Total cost was about $75, and there was a definite improvement in HP and MPG.
