I think you ll find that alot of the people on this forum will say "nothin will sound good on a 4.2"level. Im in the same boat as you thought except I'm looking for a flowmaster 40 the next time I have some extra money to spend. Goodluck in your hunt for info...unfortunately for there s alot of v6 haters around here so Idk how u ll make out.

Stock sounds the best on a V6.

Back in the day, I had a v6 camaro with a Midas turbo muffler on it, at idle it sounded like a 305 with a stock exhaust. Over 1500 rpm it was clearly a v6, but didn't sound too bad. I've also been seeing a ZR2 around town that clearly has some sort of exhaust work done to it, I think it sounds great going by. It has a low tone to it, and it's a good bit loud for a v6. For sure there are a lot of awful sounding v6's out there, but if you get the right setup, it will probably sound good. If you expect it to sound like a v8 you will end up disappointed, but I am convinced a v6 can sound good with the right exhaust. Some home work and a little trial and error will do ya some good.

If I can catch up with that ZR2 owner sometime, I'll ask him what he's got. It's not raspy at all. It sounds like a real deep V6. I know it's a completely different engine, but it may be a starting point. Have you looked around YouTube at all, it's been helpful to hear what others have done in my exhaust escapades.

The only thing i can think of is that ZR2 owner has got to have some resonators on his exhaust to get rid of the raspyness.

Not sure on that, I haven't been closer than 100ft or so. I hopped on YouTube real quick, seems like the guys that have the exit befor the reajr tire or dumped have a better ton than they guys with a full set of tails out the back.

Chambered mufflers are what you want. The 70 series will haversack rumble at idle and a bit louder than stock under acceleration. The 70 series are larger mufflers. Avoid magnaflows in this case. It will sound more ricey

I have a magnaflow on my 2011 3.7 its definitely not a v8 sound but it sounds good to me. Lotta people on here hate anything that isnt a v8 but its your money and your truck so whatever. I really like the way my truck sounds. Definitely like it better than stock because i like to hear the engine so i know whats going on.

The Flomaster setups sounded a lot better than the Maggies (it kinda hurt to say that) on the YouTube videos I mentioned. I searched "4.2l Flowmaster" and "4.2l Magnaflow" I would say "ricey" is very accurate when describing the Maggie sound on these. Check out the very first vid that comes up under Flomaster, it's on a 90's truck, no cats, and exits before rear tire. Even when he revs it, it hold tone pretty well.
