Look at your state inspection. Most say it has to exit past the cab. early 97 f150s had the tailpipe in front of the rear tire.

I will check... I have a local Police man who lives across the street from us... I will ask him... I'm start'n to like the idea of having a hidden exit for the exhaust... This will be at least 4 half feet behind the cab so I don't think fumes will be an issue...

The State of Oklahoma did away with vehicle inspections yrs ago. So I really don't have a legit way of finding out if this is illegal or not. Besides asking a law officer. Which my neighbor is working nights this month. I hate to bother him until he gets back on days.

We just purchased this 08 for my son who is 16 and has one more yr of high school then is off to college for 4-6yrs... Depending on if he goes into pharmacy. All his friends for what reasons all seem to have been given F150 4WD. Some New-Some 06-09. Well it has turned into a competition on the Modification of their trucks. The main Mod is 4 to 6in lift and 20in & larger Wheels and Tires--Expensive Good Sounding Loud Stereos--Then expensive loud exhaust systems. I'm having a hard time instilling in my 16yr old son that this is really not the practical thing to do to your truck since you are fixing to be driving this truck 3 to 4 hours on the interstate back and forth to school.

I understand the Stereo-->Every normal human loves a great sounding sound system in their auto... Within Reason... We are working on him a very nice head unit and speakers.

The wheels and tires he really does not mind not having... The stock wheels and his new Nitto A/T look pretty sweet together. Plus he understands Fuel Mileage is going to be important.

The exhaust:He really would like a sweet stainless steel dual system. But we have talked about money and chose to just keep the stock system and add a performance muffler and he does not want the exit to be visible... Which I figured I could cut the exhaust 4in past the last hanger... which is 2 half feet from the rear bumper. And paint it black. I don't think fumes will ever be a problem that far from the cab. He wants something different then all the rest. He is not a follower or do as they do.

I told him we can do things cosmetically to his 08 that will make his F150 stand out from the others, without doing as they do. LED's really have made a huge difference.

This is the main reason for my question. Trying to raise a son who wants what all his friends have. And trying to teach him to be different not a follower.

Thanks again Fellas

SoCal: Yes It would! Most of his friends parents are very wealthy... The boys are really spoiled... None of them will survive college={On their Own}. Kole my son has worked since he was 14... He now goes to HS plays sports and works part time @ radio shack and carries a 4.0 grade average... He is a national Merit Scholar many yrs in a row and has his choice of colleges to attend... Took his ACT 4 months ago and scored 26... He works his tale off in school and for Us at home. So me helping him with his 08 is kinda of a small reward... Kinda of a father-son project... Hopefully I can teach him and he carry on good maintenance habits... To days Teens... Seem to want everything now... without working hard for it... Mom and I are working hard to teach our 2 different.

Sorry to totally mess up this thread... I'm through...

Extremely well put, sir. Unfortunately, there's enormous truth in that statement.

However, I applaud your efforts and hard work with your 2 kids. I promise you that they'll never forget it.

Nice to see a teen these days willing to work hard instead of geting things handed to em when they are asked for help they give a "**** u".

Eh, never been a fan of dual exhaust. Unless you are running dual exhaust straight from the manifolds/header, it's useless.

Highflow cats, larger diameter tubing (3"), and headers is where the sound is at. That does get expensive, and you have to remember it's a stock engine and the amount of money you spend might not be worth it. Just about all aftermarket mufflers are going to sound the same with stock cats and y pipe. Stock cats could always be sold on ebay (there's still suckers that don't know about highflow cats and will pay out the *** for stock cats when theirs go bad). That and there are platinum in them, if you scrap them, but that's less than a working original cat sells for. Stock tailpipe/muffler is actually well made, it's stainless steel. Cheapest option is to weld in new high flow cats, clamp/weld on a muffler, weld the hangers to it, and cut the old tailpipe into a turn down by cutting it at an angle where it bends up to go above the axle, then flip it over. Grind it into the shape of a turn down, cut the tubing to length and slide it into the muffler. Done deal.

Teach the kid how to use money to make more money. All the mods in the world on a truck won't create you income.

Thanks Need4racin: for your advice as well as the rest of you... I myself don't really want to mess with headers on this 08... We might check into a set of high flow cats as well as for sure a straight through aftermarket muffler... Still checking into the exhaust tip question... I have seem many diesel pickups in town that are running dumps... I myself am not going for extra HP or Torque... Main 2 things are dependability and Fuel Efficiency once he starts traveling back and forth to school... But with that said... I also want him to be proud of what he is driving and take pride into taking care of it... And a throaty sounding exhaust always makes the adrenaline start to pump... Just to add fuel to the fire... 2 weeks ago... One of his closest friends come home from a church ski trip to a brand new Ford Raptor in the garage for his birthday... The young man just turned 17 yesterday and his parents bought him a $50K Race Truck... He took Kole out last night for a few hours and drove around... When Kole walked through the door... His eyes was the size of baseballs and didn't stop talking about the Raptor for 3 hours... Now I have to deal with this!!!! LoL!! I did get to look at the Raptor before his friend left and it is an awesome truck... I even got caught up in it... Kole asked me If we could some how get his 08 to sound like the Raptor? I just sat him down and told him...Once you get through HS and college--all your hard work will pay off... If you go about doing things the right way... You will be able to afford any auto you like... You will have worked hard for it and you have earned it.... Not just had it given to you... That feeling you will feel at that time will be 10 times more rewarding then someone just giving you the keys and a birthday card...

Being a parent really sucks sometimes... LoL.. Anyway enough already...
Thanks again fellas...

Tell Kole I was blessed with an 03 V6 and non running 03 Lancer

Just kidding. Kole seems like agreat kid, and you seem like a great father.

He may want a Raptor but will soon realize that the 08 he drives is extremely nice, and is in fact his own to create. Not an already pre-ownership created "race" truck. I think he will have a great time on any truck.

When it comes to exhaust I agree, true dual or just go home. I ran true dual off both of my F-150's. One of them being even a V6. Never short out on anything you do with the truck it shows quickly.

The Andy Griffith Show is my all-time favorite TV show, too! They don't make 'em like that anymore. Sad.

I hear what you're saying about today's teens. For the most part, they're worse than they've ever been, and it's the parents' fault! You don't have to teach a kid to be bad, ya know?

And I thinks it's worse with girls. At least, it is in my case. Of course, I came along late in the game (17 year old step-daughter). She was 14 when I met her mother and was already spoiled rotten. Too late to start cracking the proverbial whip when they're 14 years old.

Plus, if you have a boy, you worry about that boy. If you have a girl, you worry about ALL the boys!

You have a fantastic attitude, young feller! There were times when I was a pup that I thought my dad was the strictest, most unreasonable man on the planet, and we butted heads often. Now, I worship the ground that man walks on and wouldn't take all the money in the world for my raising!

Remember those words when you get 'old' and see if it's not true in your case.

Thank you sir!

It will pay off. I started working at a golf course when I was 14, when I turned 16 I did not want to work too much. Since I was 18 I have worked two jobs. My last job I averaged 62 hours a week. I just moved to North Carolina and just got my second job! Ive only been here about two weeks. I could not thank anyone but my father. It pays off very well, I am positive your son will thank you.
