Time for a cat....or more?

HEy Everyone,
After much reading and talking with some friends, I think I need to replace the cat. I'm getting 0430 code. Truck runs fine, but when you get it on the highway to pass, it will cough and seem to misfire, bringing the code back. Also MPG is down. I have 107K, and it tows quite a bit. Only a small trailer with tools for work, probably under 3000 LBS, but almost daily. I did have some misfires, do to bad COP, which were replaced. From what I am reading, that may have contributed to the end of the cat as well. I know I'm looking at the drivers side, but would you guys think that with the mileage, and use of the vehicle, that i might as well do both side, when the work is being done? Just paid the final payment, and would likely keep this at least a year more. Thoughts?

Get yourself a pair of magnaflow 94136 and you'll be upgraded to high flow cats......also that code indicates that it could be the rear o2 sensor malfunctioning or its connection/wires or an exhaust leak up stream from that sensor......

Seems like a lot of posts about how the O2 sensors cannot cause this code, both here and on other forums, from some Ford techs too. I also saw a service not from Ford claiming O2 sensors can't cause the code.

I had that code, Replaced my cats, nothing. Replaced O2 sensors, got some mileage and power, but still had popping. Then replaced the spark plugs and it was like a new engine.

My truck gave the P0430 code last week. I cleared it and it hasn't returned.

I went to get an estimate on a new cat. Here in California, it seems to be a dealer only item. $ 1800.00 for one?

My truck runs kinda crappy...it idles rough at times. I get 10.5 mpg city...

Regards!!

Don't want to go there again! LOL! Hoping the dealer put the anti seize on them last time like the TSB calls for.

Truck stalled on me twice this weekend, while cruising on the road. Had to coast to the shoulder, stop and restart. I miss my Powerstroke.

Well have fun paying $1800 for a cat when it very possibly might not be the problem....Change the plugs, if you had a bad coil the plug could very easily gotten fouled.

Plugs are worth checking.

I took it into the shop for it's oil change, and a tire rotation, and had them do some testing. The back pressure test showed the cat was bad, and when we took it apart, that showed it too. However, the truck is still showing the same performance issues. The 0430 code is gone, but it now it is showing random misses. It also showed at one time a misfire on #1. The reluctantly pulled the number 1 plug, and it didn't look fouled. I had a brand new FOMOCO cop at home and put that on, but it did not seem to change things. The whole set of COPS has about 5K on them, UNeek ones. Plugs are about 60K. I think I will bring it to the dealer and pray a ton that they don't break. The one we pulled did show that the dealer installed never seize on the plugs. I have to look at the old slip to see which plugs they installed. What kind of luck have people had changing the plugs on the second time around after following the Ford recommendations to install the replacements? They also thought it showed a bad MAF sensor. They cleaned it, and it seemed better, so I changed it, but no luck. Also new fuel filter. Truck will rev fine in neutral, only under load will it miss around 3k RPM trying to pass, or really stomping on it. If I gradually bring it up to speed it is fine. Idle is excellent. Thoughts? BTW I didn't spend $1800 on the cat. Thanks God!

Just came back from running errands. Truck felt good except if I got on it,which I avoided. As I pulled onto my road the light came on. 4 codes, lean bank one, lean bank 2 plus the 0430 code was back with gbe 0420 this time. Think I should move this to a different spot since we're not talking strictly exhaust now? Any other thoughts?

CHANGE THE PLUGS!

if you are having a misfire and you are pretty sure the coils are good since they only have 5k on them change the plugs. I changed mine at 120k and at 170k they started doing exactly what you are describing. Also a misfire can cause a cat to go bad. When I changed my plugs at 120k I put anti seize on them and when I pulled them at 173k they sure didn't look any different than when I pulled at 120k. So they probably did put anti seize on them and I would not worry about having them changed.

Check out how these plug looked after pulling them out after only 50k and I personally put anti seize on them
