Cold Air intake/check engine light

Just installed a new CAI. My f150 FX4 has a well maintained 103k miles on an 05 5.4L triton. Drove the truck about 45 minutes after installing the CAI (it runs great) and then the check engine light popped up. Code is 506. Rechecked all fittings and fasteners. I did notice this past year that my truck stalled a couple of times while pulling into the driveway and or an occasional stop sign. Could the CAI have exposed a previous weak condition? Throttle body is clean and working properly. PCV or idle control issues?

Please let me know if you experienced the same and what the fix was.

Thanks,

Mike

No programmer with custom tunes?

Might be the maf being dirty ......

04-05 5.4 3v were known to be tuned lean from the factory.....

If I wanted a CAI on an 05, I would definitely get a custom tune to avoid the risk of running lean. Additionally, the benefit from the CAI is about half what it can be with a custom tune. As stated above, regardless, you need to clean the MAF, if you haven't.

Thanks for the input so far guys. regarding the occasional stalling problem I noted in my thread, anything I should look at while I'm under the hood? The stalling problem just turned up about 6 months ago when the truck had about 92 k miles. Its happened about 4-5 times at stop signs or rolling into my driveway.

Thanks,

Mike

Have the plugs been changed? How many miles on the fuel filter?

103k miles on all of it. Hoses, belts etc. Have changed brakes, fluids, air filters, and serviced fuel injection system regularly. Could vacuum leaks be a potential cause for the light now that the engine is breathing more air?

Are you saying the fuel filter has never been changed? Should be changed every 20,000 to 30,000. Also, if the spark plugs have not been changed, they need to be. They are probably your problem, escpecally if you have leaned it out more with the CAI.

You said the throttle body was cleaned. Was it actually removed and brushed clean, cleaning the butterfly swivels well or did you just run a cleaner through it?

Yes sir. 103 k miles on plugs and fuel filter. The engine code 506 points at other things, but I knows it's time to pull the plugs. Will add the fuel filter to the list.

To summarize, here is what I would do.

1. Take off the CAI until I got a custom tune.
2. Change the plugs
3. Change fuel filter if it has over 20,000 on it
4. Remove the throttle body and clean it with the proper cleaner and brushes
5. Clean the MAF

There are articles in the How To section that help on doing these.

Thanks. I was already leaning towards option 1, and will add the rest to the list, as I know it's time. Unless I miss something in the maintenance guide, it looks like the first recommendation to replace the plugs is at 100k miles? I also understand its not quite as easy as replacing plugs on a 289!
