Talking which muffler to choose

hello everyone hows it going first time poster here. i am wanting to get a muffler for my 08 f150 4.6. i was leaning towards magnaflow, but was wondering if anyone else had any suggestions. im looking for a muffler that isnt loud and doesnt have a lot of in cab noise. basically i want to have to roll the windows down to hear it. also wanting to do a turn down but was reading a post on here about in front of the axle and behind the axle. would the behind the axle make it any quieter?? i like the clean look.

Just swap out your stock muffler with a 18" maggy and cut the stock piping as it come over the axel and transitions down, put a tip on there...you'll need a filler piece of pipe to make up for the differences in muffler lengths....make sure the filler piece goes in front of the new muffler...IMO

thank you sir. why the 18 inch? why not the 24 inch? would it not be quieter? also do i need to go with a oval, or round, which gives better sound. there are alot to choice from as far as size goes. 4x7 5x8 6"ROUND 5" ROUND

Oval makes a better tone....not as raspy as the round.....I just like the sound of the 18" but if you think its going to be too loud then go for the 24".....when installing new muffler make sure the majority of it is under the bed and NOT the cab....

^No.

Do a muffler swap with a Borla Pro xs if you want a subtle, smooth deep growl with stock cats. Run tips, not dumps. Dumps kill sound, tips improve it.

cool thanks guys. like i say the loudness of the exhaust is not all that important to me. as long as i cant really hear it to much in the cab. i just want a slight increase in exaust note in the cab. the stock can is just so big i want to do away with that thing. has to be robbing hp. gibson states that there si/so cat back improves gas mileage. dought that is true tho. so move the muffler back as far as possible. avforg when you say kill the sound do you meen make it quieter or sound crappy?

Crappy. They still make noise, but don't sound near as good.

Exhaust manufacturers have propaganda out there to let customers believe that they will.... but I have never seen any mileage improvements with cat backs....only better sound....the best I've heard is just from a muffler swap...magnaflow or borla

As stated before an aftermarket muffler swap with an intermediate pipe and tip in the stock location is going to be your most economical solution for a better sound.....

Keep reading the exhast guide there's alot of info in there to digest.....

You're stock exhuast already is a "cat-back" It means from the cats back. 88 and Av have both given good advice. I'd lean more towards the 22" maggie (12576) myself though. That is a si/so with center inlets and outlets. I don't recall if you need a center/offset or not

If your looking for a mpg increase, buy a car instead of a muffler.
