EGR question

I am trying to put headers for a 99 f150 on my 98 4.6 4x4. The exhaust ports are all the same, the only difference is the EGR tube. I am looking to replace the whole tube, can anybody tell me how i would need to modify the 98 egr tube to fit the headers meant for the 99 5.4?

Did more research and figured out that i need an inverted flare fitting to connect the new egr tube to the headers. Anybody know if the female threads on a manifold for the egr tube on a 5.4 are bigger than they are on a 4.6?

Right, exhaust ports are all the same for the V8's from 97 -03. You'll need an EGR reducer. The header bung for the 5four will be 19mm or 3/4" (.75). The 4.6L's use a smaller reducer over the 5.4L's, - smaller EGR valve as well, same threads.

I have EGR bung nipples and Headers pics in my gallery's, here -

BUT! - If your planning on running Pace Setters, they won't work on the 4six 4x4 unless you relocate the drivers side O2 bung. Also there's another spot they will hit on the drive train. So before going any further, which headers are you referring to ?

The nipples/reducers @ the manifold are different on some of the V8's. I've seen 2 types in past.

Here's one type for a 4.6L. 5/8 or about 16mm -

I have the pace setter long tubes part number 70-2227. Even if it has to be relocated, i would rather just do that than go through the trouble of returning them and searching for a different set. Thanks for the info on the fittings, do you have any idea or maybe a part number of the one i need? I went to the ford dealership, and they said without a part number, it would be hard to find one since the pictures of the parts on the computer are too similar. So if no part number, is there any other place that would have these or online somewheres? cant seem to find anything, its getting very frustrating. Thanks guys.

Yep, -part#70-2227, -same here.

Guess what, that part (reducer/nipple) isn't numbered. I'll show you what I mean, -look here, parts book snip ~

You have to order the fricken manifold as it's pre-installed.

Same with Dorman, although I never check if Dorman will sell that fitting separately. You may want to give them a call.

Mine came from a user on this site. He plucked it from a bone yard and sent it my way. So a salvage yard is your best bet for a factory original part. You need the 5four tube set up as well. It's still not going to fit quite right lol. You might want to keep things loose on the drivers side so you can manipulate that EGR pipe a little. Also, if you have the Pace Setter header bolts, run them in the heads at least 3 or 4 threads then back them back out BEFORE lining your headers and gaskets up. Those bolts WILL NOT start easy if you don't, - if you can get them to start at all.

Your in for some fun getting this to work. You might want to purchase HF cats w/incorporated O2 bungs to make it a little easier. Just plug the header bungs.

You'll also have to beat the snot out the drivers side. One of those primaries don't quite clear on the 4six 4x4 models. The 70-2227's work out alright with the 2wd trucks.

I think I have a Dorman Link for yuh, -shows the fitting, you'll have to call them to get just that piece -

Thanks a lot for the help, its been quite the headache chasing all these different parts down, and double checking to make sure their right. I already have the hf cats, with no o2 bungs. But i already have the o2 bungs and the guy doing the installation is just going to weld them in. Heading to the junk yard hopefully this week to try and find a few parts. Any input on how it would be to just put one hf cat after the y pipe before the muffler, and put both rear o2s after the 1 cat? the y pipe is made to fit right to the headers and its a tight fit to get the cats in there. Will be doing gotts o2 mod to the sensors, so not too worried about throwing a cel. Ever seen that done before?

maggie 94109 is a 3" i.d. cat and it will slip right onto the header collector. The only way to get both cats in there (yes only 2) is to put them right onto the header cause its too long otherwise. The downstream 02s are welded immediately after the cat. Welding just one cat at the y might not get hot enough? Also if I was considering just one cat back there then I might not even bother putting cats in and just do the gotts o2 mod. Have fun with the install it takes all day (knock on wood). The EGR and primaries will take some major "modifications" but its alot of fun and you'll love it. The Pacesetter egr is a 3/4 NPT female and I believe the egr tube is 5/8. GL

P.S. buy lots of beer you'll need it

I think I'm going to try the one cat behind the y, just to see if it will work. If any problems arise i will have to go a different route. And if it works, i can return the other HF and get my 70 bucks back and as much fun as this installation sounds...im taking the lazy way out and paying somebody else to do it. After taking one look at my rusty manifolds i had no interest in putting the sockets to them. Besides if i mess anything up, i cant afford to be without my truck for a few days waiting for somebody else to fix. I feel bad for the guy doing the installation, and my wallet. But the leaks in my exhaust have gotten bad, i cant barely stand to drive it any longer than i have to. Thanks for all of the help!
