What will a bad cat do?

Heats shields are good. I know what I am hearing is NOT the exhaust, but could be, from what I've been reading, caused by the IWE or a detonation problem and it is only under a light load or acceleration. It just developed here in the last week and a 1/2 and I was just curious, as for the detonation, could a bad cat contribute to this?
