Long Tubes on '97-'03 4.6

Greetings. I'd like to start out by saying I've read and searched this great site on this subject throughly and feel more confused than when I started. My head is starting to hurt.

If you've got a 4.6 with long tube headers could you post up the make and part number and mods needed to fit them if any. I've yet to see pictures so if you've got any that would be great.

Pacesetter list model #70-2225 fitting '97-'99 4.6, 4x4. Does anybody know why these wouldn't work on '00-'03 4.6's with two wheel drive?

It seems some have successfully installed Pacesetters on their two wheel driven 4.6's and other haven't been so lucky. I feel a few part numbers and a corresponding thumbs up or down would be of value to many.

Thanks in advance.

Hey, thanks for that link.

Here's a reply from Tim Lawler, Pacesetter Sales/Service/Tech:

Hello,
Unfortunately the 70-2226 will not fit without heavy modification.... We do not currently list anything for the 01 2WD...

He didn't mention anything about the 70-2227's though. Maybe a phone call would be best.

70-2227 from pacesetter will do the trick but you WILL have to modify your exhaust cause LTs are much longer than stock...I have a '97 4.6 and installed the LTs and maggie converters in half a day and a shop did the piping. You can check my gallery to see how it is set up. I took a serious paint stripper (something like 40% V.O.C.) and took that crap shipping paint right off, sanded down the pipes, and re-painted them with 3 coats of high temp header paint and cured them on the vehicle. So far they have worked perfectly with zero issues but I have a side exit exhaust and they do drone a hell of alot more. If you do the work yourself once you have the headers, high flows, and upstream O2s connected start up the truck.....The LTs with just the converters after them sounds amazing especially after all that hard work. GL

P.S. As you will see I re-tapped ALL the header threads in the block and cleaned them out afterward....I HIGHLY recommend doing this it makes the install easier.

@ParnAZ: one observation in the forums is that 97-98 trucks can fit the LT no problem but on 99-up trucks there seems to be fitting issues.

@lowfloor: kindly update this thread if youve gone through with your project. i also want to put LT's on my 01 screw 4.6L but im from abroad so i cant afford to return it if there would be fitting issues.
thanks

Thanks for the replies guys. This is what has me stumped: Header applications list '97-'99 separate from 00'-'03. I can't imagine what could have changed on the later models that would preclude the use of these headers, but clearly something is going on. Again, I think a phone conversation with the right person could shed lots of light on this.

Shifty 85 and ParnAZ both have '97's (4.6, 4x2, extra cab) with 70-2227's. My truck is a 4x2 supercrew. Maybe I should have titled this thread who has long tube headers on their supercrew as that certainly could be a game changer.

Maybe it would be the same amount of work to flip the stock exhaust manifolds and build myself a homemade single turbo kit than it would be to fit long tube headers. That'd give me the grunt I'm looking for and would probably work very well with the 3.55's out back. Even just five or six pounds of boost...but I digress.

A friend of mine operates a transmission shop. I'll stick a bug in his ear and the next time he has what I'm looking for on a lift, I'll get some pictures and we'll start comparing the undersides to see what we're dealing with.

ANY supercrew owners out there with long tubes???

i see you found my longtube thread. i orderd the 5.4 4x4 headers and they fit just fine the only thing i had to mod. was the EGR tube witch i just blocked off and tuned for it.

not sure what changed 00-03 thoe.

i just went on summit. i know your have a 4.6L but i orderd the 5.4 headers and they worked fine and the only diff was the EGR bung size.
