Exhaust tip question

So I eventually plan on returning my exhaust to a SI/SO Magnaflow, more than likely an oval body muffler, in 4x9x14, IIRC. (would have to look again)

I know the optimal pipe diameter for a dual system is typically 2.25" out of the muffler, which I'm pretty sure is what I have now.

My new tip is a 2.25" ID, so will I be able to use this tip when I go back to a 2.5" pipe for me new SI/SO?

Well I was thinking about having the edges of the 2.5" pipe ground down just enough to slip it over to have enough area to hold a weld. But I guess we shall see...
