Quick question before I go to the muffler shop

Okay, so I've got an appointment with the shop in a couple hours to get a tailpipe on my truck...wondering what diameter tubing to go with?

It's a stock single exhaust with a Flowmaster 40 right now, PO decided to just dump it after the muffler. Going to stay with the single exhaust until I decide to do headers/x-pipe/true duals, so I'm wondering what pipe size would be good for now? It's a DD and an occasional tow rig. Anything's gotta be better than a droning 40 dumped under the bed though...

EDIT: It's a 5.4 auto 4x4 too, FYI.

I would do 3 inch pipe for a single exhaust.

I'd either leave the old one if good. I have a 3" si/so catback but it goes 3" about 12" before the muffler. Lots of people just replace the muffler only, works well.

not possible. His original post says the PO (previous owner) dumped it under the bed. So, he does not have an "old one" to leave there. He has to run a new tailpipe.

3" in general, unless you want the MAX low end torque. Then go with a 2.5" mid pipe.

Well, I went ahead and got the 3" with a nice chrome tip on there. No more drone in the cab, but has a nice rumble when you get on it. Also noticed a lot more off-idle torque. Thanks for the help!
