Dual in Dual out thoughts

I have just bought a used truck (99 F150 5.4l). Part of the deal was them fixing the exhaust.

I am not a big loud pipes guy...this is a daily driver for my wife and we haul horses. The current set up is true duals with no x pipe or h pipe or anything. The cats are there (i dont know about the guts...we dont have emissions tests here) and after that they cut the y pipe...ran the 2 pipes to glass pack mufflers, and no tail pipes at all after the glass packs.

1. how does this set up affect the truck right now? I am getting it fixed...but will I notice a difference? I am quite sure the truck was never tuned for that kind of set up...

2. the suggestion made from the muffler guy was a dual in dual out muffler and then pipes out the side (since I haul horses from time to time) I am guessing a Magnaflow since that is the brand all over his walls...but I dont really know...the used car lot is paying for it, so I am sure its whatever they have that is cheep.

I dont care about a mean sound...and I really just want stock or a little better performance right now...I just want something that wont make me deaf on the way to work. How will this set up be compared to stock and will I need to do any type of tunning to get it to perform as it should?

I have true duals with an h-pipe and two magnaflows and 45ed out the back with tips. Still the original cats as well. I don't smog or any of that either. I like the sound. Has a nice deep tone under a load but still not loud. I have a couple videos on youtube. Here is one for you to get an idea. Hope this helps.

Magnaflow makes great stuff. They have a nice deep tone but not the drone at highway speeds, this is great especially when pulling trailers. And out the side is best for that because pipes straight out the back will reverb on the trailer and drive you nuts. For your setup I would personally go with the magnaflow 22" di/do. Nice sound, but not too loud. Stay away from flowmaster and any other "chambered" mufflers as these have major drone...

A dual in/dual out Maggie with an internal X-pipe and 45'd exits would look good, and will keep the sound from reflecting off the trailer and going back towards the cab.

you don't sound dumb. They can be quite loud though depending on how everything is set up, and unlike the post above, they can sound good. Note "can"

True, it does sound like grade A poop. My expertise only goes to the OHC Ford engines. Everything else is new territory with me.

You do have a point, cause you're truck don't sound half bad. The newer engines from ford, or older like mine if built right, sound like a mark2 gt40 if they use straight through muffs. Music to my ears.
