This is in the Articles and How To section. It may have your answer. I think there is a special cleaner for TBs.

OK, that answers the second part. But now I'm concerned that I have degraded the protective coating by using regular carb spray. Any advice?

I would just drive it and see what hppens. Keep an eye on milage. If a problem develops, then you may need to replace the throttle body. You may get away with no problems.

I'd wheel out that coating they put in there. I used a fine sanding wheel, then a buffing wheel w/red rouge. You can top it off with a fresh wheel, then jewelers polish (white). I did it 4 or 5 years ago and it doesn't get dirty. Of coarse you need to run a good filter element. It stays shiny.
