Question I have a 4.2 V6 and want some advice on the total exhaust makeover?

I know it's probably been talked about but here goes anyways. It's a stock 4.2. ltre V6 motor in my 1997 F150 4x4!

Where can I get 4.2 v6 headers?

I want to run duals but unfamiliar with the best brand and/or size to buy... FYI: I want more performance yeah, with a rich hollow sound.?

Also the 02 sensors, can they just be removed from the system without any major issues? Like cut the entire exhaust out, add headers and then full dual exhaust without cats. Suggestions would be awsome.. Thanks in advance..
I called the local exhaust guy and he told me 400 for cat back custom duals 2 1/2 inch with flowmaster mufflers. I feel that's a bit steep... I'm a newb when it comes to exhaust..

I have the cheery bomb extreme on mine. Its aggressive and sounds good on a v6. Muffler was 30 bucks and had it welded on for 35. I dont think i would spend 400 bucks on exhaust unless cats were involved

So what your saying is I should just dump the truck at the junk yard and get a ford v8 truck? lol, I like this truck enough to get what I can out of it. I will get this done. Let me fill you up with a small tale. A true tale. I watched a guy take a GEO Tracker 4 cyl., put a different intake, with a home made adapter and a 4 bbl carb. That GEO took almost all v8's that crossed his path and this is no lie.

I witnessed that GEO take out a vette, anything is possible for the right money. I just want to do a minor mod to increase the ponies in it and maybe get a little better mpg. No disrespect meant here. A learning lesson maybe.. I am a newb when it comes to a ford v6 but I know anything is possible when you put your mind to it. It's cool though.

programmer, intake and straight through exhaust, maybe a turbo charger and regear the rear end, then you will have some more ponies!

OK Kool... TY So what would you suggest for the truck. Like the other guy said? What kind of intake? And I want to take out the cats for better mpg... 02 Sensors, would they have to go into hollow cats or what? I like the idea of Hollow Cats.. What brand muffler do you recommend?

Get a set of magnaflow hiflow cats, keep the O2s (unless you want to have codes popping up), catback SIDO 2.5", 3" tips, muffler your choice (cherry bomb vortex chambered sounds ok, it will never sound like a v8), LT headers you will have to find a set for a Mustang 3.8L motor, even then you will need to persuade it with a hammer for some minor clearance issues. A regear is good also. As for the intake I'd recommend an AirForce 1 CAI if you can find one (they don't make them anymore), otherwise do a search on here for the GOTT's mod.

If you have to put performance parts on it, Put a Cold air intake on it. (i used airraid and loved it) i put a performance throttle body on it I think it was a bbk, True dual it with single in single out cherry bomb extremes run it to about 4 inch rolled edge tips (just look better no difference) and you will have a pretty bad *** V6

I gutted the cats on my 06 5.4 and have no CEL. All you need to do is put a spacer between the o2 sender and the exhaust, http://forums.evolutionm.net/evo-how...ouler-how.html

Look, I hate to be the ******* here, but you remind me of me, only about 2 years ago.
I had this pony pack 00 V-6 mustang, Granted it sounded ok at idle but the duals on it sounded like **** above 3,000RPM.
The car came with the duals on it, and it had one factory muffler and one from advance.

Lets get some things laid out.
1) its yours, so do what you want to it.
2)its a 1997 and likely has lots of miles, therefor wore out.
3)anything you do to that V-6 is going to net VERY small gains, unless you go forced induction.
4)you are wasting your time.

Let me tell you a little story.
I had the blue 2000 V-6 mustang 5 speed. I thought it was the best thing ever and that I was going to get some "serious" power from it.
Well after wasting money on a E-bay intake, a "chip" (I was stupid at the time) and a short throw shifter (about the only worthwhile thing I got for it) I realized that its not a 4.6, never will be and its old and not worth putting money into.
The car booked for like $3,500!
Well I was wrong, and I wasted a lot of money to be wrong.
You're V-6 is either going to sound like ***, or be quiet. VERY few people can find a nice in between.

Nothing wrong with 6 cyl. engines, some are pretty good, like say the 3800 Series II with the S/C on it in the Pontiac's.
Or the straight six in the Toyota and Nissan cars.

The 4.2L is really just a slightly larger 3.8L mustang engine. The dollar to power gained ratio is absurd.
Either go buy a cheep camaro or mustang with a V-8 or save for something else.

I don't know how old you are, but I bet you are younger than me. Trust me, you are wasting time and money on that truck trying to make it sound good and go fast.
F.Y.I 2 1/2 duals are more then my 5.4L 3V needs unless I had a whistle under the hood.
If you MUST dual it, id go no larger than 2"

In the end, do what you want I don't care, but its sound advice to just leave it alone and go buy a V-8 if you want power and sound.

If you insist, get a eaby intake, fine a real tuner some where and run some duals on it.
This might help.
