Replacing muffler and leaving stock pipe, nonsense?

If you just replace the stock muffler with a magnaflow, bassani or borla and keep stock pipe will it make any difference? I know it will have a better sound but will it add anything to performance? Thanks for any input.

Not really. As long as you keep the stock Y-pipe and intermediate pipe, don't expect much in terms of performance.

What is a good muffler to go with? I don't want it super loud, just a nice deep tone. Was thinking magnaflow, but they have many different options, round, oval, 4 inch, 5 inch, etc. Do I need offset, or center? Is stock pipe 2 1/4" or 2.5"?

I believe stock pipe is 2.5. Magnaflows are a good choice in my opinion.

Get on You Tube and check some out. The general consensus around here is Bullets, Magnaflows, and Borlas. Some still cling onto Flowmaster, but they usually change their mind after hearing one of the above.

I personally recommend Magnapacks (14"x4" round bodies) for Magnaflows.

I as thinking 5x8x18, I don"t want it real loud just a nice rumble. I figured the 18" is quieter than the 14" length.

I had true duals on a 4.8 Silverado and single in single out on another 4.8 Silverado. The single in single out was louder but liked them both. They were 40 series. Want to try something different and the older I get the quieter I want it. I was thinking about a 50 series Flowmaster or a Magnaflow 5x8, 18" length.

FWIW, I just did the Magnaflow 5"x8"x14" muffler swap on my 4.6 and I love it! On my 01' I used to have I did the 18" but I like the 14" much better. The 18" was pretty quiet. Also I am 39 and dont really care for loud trucks either. Its all preference but you cant go wrong with Magnaflow.

I am partial to Borla, but Magnaflow and bullets also sound great.

Yeah my expedition has a 40 series on it right now. My dad's 250 we just installed their new super 10 which is by far the best sounding exhaust I've heard. I'm thinking about selling mine and getting a super 10. It's probably the loudest exhaust I've heard and it sounds clean.

I have used Dynomax Super Turbo's and really liked the nice mellow sound they have. No drone and just a nice rumble that you can live with on long drives as well as around town.
