Drop-In Replacement Muffler Recommendations

I have a '99 F1 with a 5.4L and I'd like to fit one of my 35" spares under the bed, but the exhaust is in the way so I'm looking for a shorter muffler that I can dump before the axle. Not looking to blow windows out or cut off any of the 4 cats; just need something with maybe a little more grumble to it that I can fit with the stock piping in the stock location.

I'm planning on ordering off of Summit Racing since I have a stack of discount offers from them, and I'm going to have a local fab shop weld it in for me.

I have a preference for Flowmaster and Magnaflow exhausts, but I'm open to other suggestions. I'm interested in a Flowmaster 50 or a Super 44, and also a Magnaflow muffler that I cannot find a part number or name for, just that its a 22" muffler. Suggestions welcome.

The first one will be louder...but they are stil relatively quiet mufflers.

All he is looking for is a little more grumble. 18" might be too loud, especially since the sound will all be under the truck.

Dumb question, but I'm assuming that the exhaust will be louder if it's dumped right after the muffler as opposed to having a tailpipe to the back or side of the truck? After listening to several videos, the 14" doesn't seem too loud, but it could be the camera for all I know, haha. The Flowmasters kind of seem to have a bit of a drone to them while the Magnaflows don't, so I'm seriously considering a Magnaflow now.

yeah flowmasters (like my 50) are known for "the drone" lol... Mine has actually gotten better. Ive had it on for about 35K miles now. and I love it. People Ive passed with windows down say it sounds great. They say it's not too loud, but very throaty when passing at WOT. I personally wish I could hear it a little more in the cab (I have SI/DO coming out at 45 degree angle out the back behind the rear wheels)... I did have just a 50 series SI/SO (like what you're talking about getting) just stuck on there for a while with no pipes and it sounded really good, but my nylon string holding it up kept melting And I was experiencing headaches and could smell exhaust, not very good signs....

I have that 50 series in my garage. Its a SI/SO. I'd sell it to you for 10 bucks plus shipping, so that'd probably be like 40 or 50 bucks out the door or something like that (I honestly have no clue how much shipping would be, Im guessing based on past experiences). Lemmie know if you want it

When an exhaust is dumped before the axle, all the sound is projected down towards the ground. All they do is echo the sound and keep the noise under the truck at all times. Weak. Dumping=louder inside/quieter to the rest of the world. If your going to dump, dump after the axle to at least get the sound towards the back of the truck and not directly underneath. When you extend the tailpipe up and over the axle either 45 or 90 degrees behind the rear wheel, the sound is projected out and echos off building, cars, and sometimes people if your lucky. The best sound to get out a muffler IMO is to have it exit before the rear tire, like the first video in my sig. With that comes massive drone though.

The 14" is definately not a loud muffler, especially with your truck and 4 cats. But it will have less drone then a flowmaster.

I replaced my stock muffler with a 18" Magnaflow. I tow often so I didn't want to go to loud. I think it is perfect. More rumble when you get on it but otherwise only slightly louder than stock at idle and cruising.

I definitely wouldn't recommend dumping your exhaust. I used to have a ZR2 Blazer with a Flowmaster 40 dumped just after the axel. At low RPMs, the drone was deafening. I know its comparing apples to oranges, but I'll never have my exhaust dumped again and I won't own another Flowmaster muffler, or a Chevy for that matter.

Well, it turns out that a 35" spare will fit under the bed with no mods. Granted, its about an inch away from the exhaust pipe, but I think it'll be fine. So now I'll get a new muffler for the sake of having one, haha. Since I don't need to dump the exhaust, if I keep the stock side-exit exhaust behind the rear wheel, will that keep the drone to a minimum?

yes. the best spot for least drone is under the bed close to the rear axle FYI
