$500 Upgrade

I have a 2006 5.4 Crew Cab Lariat. Everything is stock except i've upgraded to a K&N air filter. I'm thinking about adding a MAC CAI that supposedly give me an extra 19 HP, and at the same time adding a Hyper Tech MAX Power chip. Has anyone done either / both of these mods? I'm looking for more power / better mileage and from what i've read this is the combo to do both. I've got 82K on the odomoter and plan on running the thing into the ground. Has anyone had any issues with this chip? I've never done this before, having the local shop mechanic do it on the side.

Thoughts? He's charging me $500 out the door.

DON'T DO IT...

#1 look at the gotts intake mod/DVW mod

#2 a CAI with a canned tune on a 3 valve is asking for trouble so you'll run it into the ground in no time easily

Don't bother with a chip or an intake. Go gotts mod and get custom tunes from Troyer/VMP/PHP

I ran a canned level two tune on my PHP gryphon with a AEM CAI for almost two months, and never once had a problem.

I recommend a PHP tuner and custom and I highly recommend a CAI for both looks/sound and what little power gain you get.

This is me, with first hand experience on my truck, if you are going to get a CAI and wait on tunes, go light on the long pedal, and you should be fine.

Like I said, I went almost two months before I got my custom 85/93 perf tunes.

The CAI alone is worth money to me because of how much better (IMO) it makes the enging bay look.

Its really up to you though, do you want to go cheep and look stock and get a little gain, or do you want a better look, along with the sound for a bit more money?

Either way you should get custom tunes ASAP or wait until you get them to install the intake.

Why can't you run a CAI with canned tunes?

^why is everyone so opposed to a CAI? why?

^ I agree.

I have no idea why people here are so bitter towards a CAI, I got my AEM used from a member here for like $170, and I love it.

I also got the custom tunes for it, I love the way it sounds and looks under the hood. It really cleans the engine bay up.

If I was you I would look around here in the for sale area for a intake used for a good price, and get it.

because some trucks tend to run lean stock, and adding a CAI could cause a really dangerous lean condition..Never mind the fact that some trucks come in a already dangerous lean condition when new w/o a CAI.

i personally ran canned level two tow tune until I got my custom tunes, Bill and Corey even advised me to run the level two, and if I recall correctly, I was told it would be ok as long as I didn't go WOT.

Never had any problems.

Tunes?

Sorry I know this is a dumb question but what are 'tunes' and where do you get them?

I've had 2, a Airraid and a Volant and didn't notice any difference with them on or not. MPG or 'seat in the pants'. Not worth spending the money from my experience. Also I dislike oiled filters which is why I switched to the Volant. But I wasn't very pleased with the fit of the Volant and the fact that I didn't get any difference I got rid of it.

Then of course not ignoring the fact that without tunes you can do major damage to the engine, thats why.

I personally have a Gryphon and I'm pretty happy with it. Not 100% sure I'd go with them again. But one thing is don't expect anything quick from them, response or product.

Where would you get one then? Because I am looking for one. About to put a lift on and need to compensate for loss of gas mileage

Nothing will regain those lost MPG's after you throw a lift and big tires on it.

See I've heard otherwise. Seen people on here saying with a CAI and programmer w/ stock gears they are back to normal (14-15)
