New here and looking to get some pipes
Hey guys,
I just joined the forum here yesterday since I picked up a 2005 FX4 last week. I really need to get rid of the stock exhaust system on here.
Since I joined yesterday I have been searching these threads and youtube for hours trying to figure out what exhaust I would like. I looked under my truck and I have 2 cats.
Here is what I am looking for:
- Loud, but still be able to talk at highway speeds in the cab
- Decently loud rumble at idle
- Minimal to no low end torque loss, I don't care as much about high end as I will be towing and hauling quite a bit
- I would prefer a little increased performance
- Don't want to touch the cats yet, I am thinking high flows in the future though
- No true duals since I don't want to tune yet either
- Most likely a single in dual out system, I have to have dual pipes for the looks.
I am racking my brain with all the options and am looking at Flowmaster original 40's, super 44's, or 10 series. If there is a magnaflow system or anything else that would satisfy my options please let me know. What do you guys think?
Oh and just as a side note, I used to own a 93 Chevy 2500 with a 350 that I had no cats and y-pipe straights on. I am not looking to be quite that loud again.

It's tough man. I would say the 12198 maggie. I have it sounds great once broken in. I am putting 94106 hi flows on in a couple of weeks to louden it up tho. Maggies have a nice idle IMO, but quieter than a flowmaster. A dynomax race bullet may do the trick for you as well. Read some of the posts on here in this section and youtube some of the various systems.
I gotta agree. I have the Magnaflow on mine and the sound is excellent. Throaty, but not tinny. Good rumble at idle, and not obnoxious on the highway. The interior noise levels are just right.
Avoid the urge to do straight pipes as you will lose your low-end torque. I had a chance to tour the Magnaflow R&D facility in California when they used my truck as a prototype. They're quite sophisticated when it comes to this stuff. It's more than just bending pipes and hanging them with some mufflers.

well i talked to a guy at the muffler shp and he said he would not mess with any of the cats or sensors but just do the y pipe a two 3.5 x 18 inch tips. will i be losing any power, if alike what are we talking about low end, top end what?

Thanks for the responses guys.
Truckguy24, That magnaflow looks like it could work. How loud is it in the cab, I want to be able to hear it inside while driving but not so loud that I have to yell to talk. Have you noticed any power loss or gains.
Avfrog, I really like the sound of your old flowmaster system from the link in your sig. How do you think that would work with a SI/DO 40 series, would it sound similar? I have seen alot of people on here don't like flowmaster though or they say that the 40 series is quiet, thats why I was looking at the 10 series.

Mine is decent in cab... low hum on the highway and a nice rumble under acceleration. It's just to quiet for my tastes right now... so hi flows her being installed
I gained some low end and my truck is a freak... gained 1-1.5 mpg, but don't count on that...my truck is weird like that
