Going from 2.5" to 3" Is it worth it?

I am going to put on a Magnaflow muffler. My exhaust guy said that I might as well stay with the stock 2.5" pipe because after they mandrel bend 3" pipe it constricts it down to 2.5" so you really aren't gaining much.
What do you guys think? It does save me about $175.00. I would think that he would reccomend the 3" just to make more money. He seemed like an honest guy.

Hello sir!

They are snowing you, imho.

By definition, true mandrel bending preserves BOTH cross-sectional dimensional integrity (shape, lol) and diameter. No contriction.

My guess is they are using another method that actually does constrict the pipe, and trying to tell you it's mandrel -and they actually do not have that capability ( the tools for which are expensive). Good thing they are not pushing this.

Stay 2.5" with just a muffler swap to preserve yer low-end torque.

Try Searchin' fer some recent posts by Jim Allen for some good reading on this.

***EDIT *** here's a relevant one: ==> https://www.f150online.com/forums/4007591-post14.html

Cheers & take care.

3" all the way from the Y-pipe to the tail pipe will give you the best low end torque.

I guess I just answered my own guestion. I looked at magnaflows web site and saw that they dont make a 3in/2.5 out.

Hi sir! How are you?

Don't sweat it - transitions are not optimal - you want smooth - constant diameter throughout as much as possible.

Hey fellas & OP - my only point here is, sensing (perhaps incorrectly) that there was a budgetary constraint - going with Jim Allen's tested alternative - a 2.5" muffler-only solution, gave you 80% of a 3" catback's benefits with no additional piping at all required - lowest cost - best bang-fer-buck. That's all, okay?

Cheers & bests everyone!
