Muffler location relative to sound?

Does the location of the muffler make a difference in the sound? For emample, if the muffler is more towards the back of the truck will it sound deeper?Or will it sound quieter?I listened to two trucks that had same mufflers and pipe diameter and they sounded very different. They both had the cats and they were chambered mufflers (flowmasters).

the further back the muffler is, the least drone you will have. the 2 trucks you heard might have not had the exact same mufflers, or motors.

Every little change in the exhaust makes a bigger difference than you would think. That is why pretty well no 2 trucks sound exactly a like. Even cutting off turn downs make a big difference in sound.

The further back, less drone.Doesnt drone only affect the interior? But no sound difference on the outside of the truck? If the cats are still present will the truck have very much roar, regaurdless of the mufflers?

^ this definitely be a factor in the "roar" effect.

I have always had flowmasters on the sportscars and like the sound. So flowmasters it will probably be.I have had 2 chamber but am curious what the single chamber would be like.I will probably be staying with just replacing the muffler and the single exhaust for now.I want it to roar but not any glasspak snap and crackle.

Single chamber doesn't sound as good IMO. It is not a deep and "rumbly" as the 40s. It is louder though. If you want a great flowmaster sound you will have to do something with your stock cats. I love the sound of my 40s...

Do I need to need to remove all the cats or just the 2 rear ones?

The best sound is with NO cats, but you have to tune. Next to NO cats would be stock 4 out and replace with magnaflow hi flows.

I've always been told the closer the mufflers are to the manifolds/headers, the more roar/rumble from the exhaust. The closer they are to the rear/tips, the more mellow the sound.

The reason that you have less drone when the mufflers are farther back towards the rear is that the resonance from the mufflers themselves is no longer right underneath your seat... And I believe further from the manifolds/headers.

Mine are flush with the end of the cab so you can't see them.

One of the bigger influences in also pipe length. Notice how the mustangs have such a unique sound? Yes some can be attributed to the motor set-up and such, but the pipe length is so short and the mufflers are so close to where the tips are. Also, front tire exits are louder than out the rear due to the shorter length in pipe.
