You guys will find out quick I'm new to this site so while I've done a search for this I'm sure I overlooked it somewhere. I'm a shade tree mechanic at best and really not good with these newer FI engines. This thread got me to thinking and have some questions. Obviously you guys believe that you should NOT run a CAI without some sort of Tune in place. Why? I'm asking because I honestly have no idea. Second, I get that adding a CAI and Tune will increase performance but have you found it true that this has also increased MPG? If I gain just 3 hwy MPG this could actually save me money with the miles I drive. If money is short which should come first the CAI, the tune or punt and go with dual exhaust?

#1 - you should never run a CAI on a 3 valve Ford motor without a custom tune, the 2 valve motors are fine but you can maximize your gains with a custom tune

#2 why? because of the MAF sensor housing, and the CAI's allow the 3 valve motors to run lean because the stock tune cannot compensate as the OP's truck proved once again

#3 running lean = BOOM

^^^ Yep ^^^

Bigwheel, here's a more detailed, and entertaining, explanation .
I know you, unlike some others, have no issues with search, so out of respect for that, I provided the relevant link for ya. Enjoy!

Nice to see that with a little age, you're beginning to mellow a little.

Well my question is on the tunes is...

I have a SCT LiveWire, can I run my MAC intake on my '05 with the livewire tune and selecting aftermarket intake??? If not why they have the aftermarket option? Just curious. LOL

Also I didnt realise that they new intakes changed where the MAF sensor went... I can see why a custom tune is a big plus.

Now to find out where to get a custom tune quick, I hate waiting on things. LOL

So my 2002 SCrew with the 5.4L will be ok without a tune if I put the Spectre CAI in?

Hello!

Here ya go: ==> https://www.f150online.com/forums/ex...ir-intake.html

If you noticed that was a recursive entry into the top of this thread, yer right

Re-reading it should answer yer question, assuming you did read the whole thing.

Short answer = Yes. With Caveat ( see below: )

Caveat = the Sphincter CAI (Crappy Air Intake) is no better than a simple $10 Gotts Mod - actually, Gotts is superior as it keeps IAT's in check. Plus the Sphincter's aluminum tubing is the absolute worst material for an intake tube. Save your money - buy a programmer, or lots o' brewski's instead... send me one as thanks for helping you avoid a Boo-Boo ...lol

In closing, if you require any additional detailed information on The Sphincter, please PM our esteemed Sphincter expert - Shotgunz.

He knows these things inside & out
