Cold air intake problems, help out a old timer!
Cold air intake problems, help out a old timer!
Its been quite some time since I posted but I have a huge problem and need some direction. I am trying to help out a kid at work who has a 2001 f150 with 5.4l engine, he bought a cold air intake and I installed it for him. Everything went smooth until we started the truck. It idles slightly rough and the engine kills the second you put your foot on the throttle. Check engine light came on and we ran the code, it said something about the MAF sensor, getting too much air volume or something of that sorts. Has anyone ever had any problems with rough idle or engine dieing out after installing a cold air intake. I triple checked all my connections, everything is correct and hooked up tight, I had others look over it as well, we are all stumped. If I unplug the MAF, the engine runs better, almost perfect, but slightly rough at times. Is it going to be a problem running the truck with the MAF sensor unplugged? Is the check engine light going to keep coming on if its unplugged. Please help....
That computer goes into a "limp" mode under CELs so it will still run with a code, but not as good as it should. The light will stay on as long as it is unplugged. You might have broke the MAF when you installed it into the new CAI? Maybe a wire came loose? Maybe you could try cleaning it too.
Do you recall the #'s ?
P0100 Mass Air Flow Circuit Malfunction
P0101 Mass Air Flow Circuit Range/Performance Problem
P0102 MAF Circuit Low Input
P0103 MAF Circuit High Input
P0104 MAF Circuit Intermittent
Did you disconnect the battery (For AT LEAST 20 minutes for KAM reset and re-adaption) ? Or,- pull the PCM mini fuse under the dash (middle row 2nd up from bottom ; orange 5)
There's TWO plugs/connectors for the MAF harness. Clean them both, sometimes a little dirt or factory dielectric can disrupt heater current.
I don't know how you could have damaged the platinum wires, unless you removed the sensor from it's cylinder ?

Yep,- it's the harness or sensor wires. Somethings broke or not connected. Should be able to determine the problem in about 10 minutes. The Maf harness is only about a foot long; -check continuity (end to end). If that checks out, - pull the sensor and eyeball the wires,- they still in one piece?

Post back what you find and we'll go from there.

Thanks guys for the help thus far. I know I will get this figured out.
I have disconnected the battery but that didn't seem to correct the issue. I will break out the digital multi meter and get to testing..
I will keep you all updated, thanks again.. I hate being in this position, I tried helping out this kid by doing the install, now I feel as if its my fault he is having problems....
