As an installation virgin... (CAI related)

...I would appreciate some guidance!

I have recently purchased and waiting delivery of a Volant CAI for my 2008 Lariat 5.4l 3v. I made the purchase from one of the fine members right here on F150online (1st purchase made from here).

I have watched a few installation videos of CAI's however none of them have been F150 specific.

Upon inspection, there is much of the stock intake system to be removed. However, some setups are different. Correct me if I'm wrong but all that needs to be done on my setup is the disconnection of the mass flow air sensor which is clipped into the right side (if you are standing directly in front of the truck) and the disconnection of the relief valve hose on the left side. Then the rest of the system can be removed and the Volant installed directly onto the throttle body (which points upwards on the F150; have seen them pointing out straight in other setups).

Am I missing anything really important apart from disconnecting the battery before the install?

I know this is a relatively easy DIY install but I will be doing this for the 1st time under my own guidance so I do not want to have any problems!

I greatly appreciate any input offered by you guys.

Thanks,

HTB

This isn't going to be much help but when I went to install my Volant intake it was a pain in the ***, I couldn't get it to line up at all. Its still sitting on my work bench from me getting frustrated with it.

I've never put on a Volant CAI but most are pretty simple. Remove the stock vent line and MAF sensor, remove a few bolts, and reinstall the new intake. Shouldn't take more than an hour as long as everything lines up correctly.

It's simple, before you go on and dissasemble your OE intake make study and see how your volant will go on there and that you have all the necessary parts. Its not too hard to do, however the question you need to ask is if your truck is going to run lean with a CAI w/o a programmer for it. I dont know for the 08's but for the 04's to 06's you do need a programmer to run a CAI since it will make it run leaner w/o one.

I have read about this; so here is my question.

How will I know if my truck is running lean? I understand that running lean means a higher air to fuel ratio, but how will I actually know if it is running lean after the install? Also is running lean actually dangerous? I have read a lot about it but nothing has answered these q's.

I do plan to get a Gryphon. I spoke with Corey and I have been told I can run my CAI first and then order the programmer with the neccessary custom tunes.

However it will be a good couple of months of just running the CAI so I would appreciate any knowledge with this.

Sounds like you got an 07-08 intake for your 06. Yes they're different.
