Nixon, I did a lot of looking around before buying my S&B CAI for my 99'. Volant is the only that makes an enclosed one that I know of for our year trucks (but what the heck do I know). I'd say if you really want S&B I'd say do the Gotts mod and then drop an S&B filter in. You get the S&B and it's still enclosed. I got CAI they offered and I'm going to build my own heat shield for it.

I was looking into building an enclosed box until I saw this link on here https://www.f150online.com/forums/li...ir-intake.html The idea with the open CAI is to get some cooler air coming in around the headlight area as you drive and also eliminate the stock restrictive air hole from the fender. So that's why I think the front open heat shield would be a little better than a box because it is drawing air from wherever it is easiest to get it from while still being shielded from the heat. I got a link of a picture of the heat shield that comes with the S&B for our trucks. Don't get me wrong I love my CAI because it was cheaper than other brands, while still serving its purpose very well, but the heat shields they come with are tiny. I hope I've been a help.

Regards,
Otto

I can't say for certain that open is better than closed but it's what I believe. Each company does their own dyno testing on vechiles with their CAI to trying to show theirs is better than anothers and they really all come out within a few hp/tq of eachother. I wanted to stay away from the fender air opening because of all the dust that gets kicked up into that area when driving down gravel and dirt roads. I got an oiled filter which naturally lets in a little more dust than stock so if I could stay away from getting any more dirt than possible in there I was going to. I've gone over 3000 miles with my CAI and the filter really isn't that dirty. I also stayed away from the closed box of Volant because I've heard rumors that the give more of a whistle sucking in air,(maybe somebody with a Volant can chime in and give an experienced opinion) where as S&B has a slight sucking noise but not bad and it sounds real good at WOT. It really makes the engine sound like it's running right.
