CAI & Hypertech

Hey my dad has a 04 f150 and runs lean with a k&n CAI installed. Is there a way to tune it with the hypertech 3 programmer? K&N recommended the programmer but so far no luck, it still runs lean. Anyone have experience with this setup?

Hypertech is programmed for a stock intake. Are you sure they didn't say Xcal 3 by SCT?

You should not use the CAI on a 2004 until you get a custom tuned Xcal3 or a custom tuned Gryphon.

Yeah, they actually gave him the part# for the hypertech. He called k&n & they simply told him to take the CAI off. Great customer service. Was hoping there was a quick fix that didn't cost him another 300+ dollars.

Sorry. Not for a CAI. It is really important to have custom tunes on the 2004s and 2005s with a CAI. Not only that, the CAI does not do a lot without a custom tune on even later models. The parameters in the PCM need to be changed to take advantage of the extra air.

Even at best, a CAI is a minimal return for what it costs. Your better option is a good tuner and the home adaptation you will find in the How To section.

Resante,

It's always been my understanding that on the 04 F-150s you don't need a tune to compensate for a cold air intake due to the placement of the MAF compared to the 05-08 trucks. That said our tune 04 F-150 doesn't compensate for a cold air intake and on our programmers that do you're given the option to select like 1 of 10 cold air intakes we support when programming the vehicle.
