Drop in K&N
Are they worth it?
I don't want to drop in a 50 dollar filter if it doesn't do much.
Does it thow any codes with it being oiled?
I know that 2001 Screw 5.4's have touchy MAF's. So I am alittle worried.

Next, they do little or nothing for HP or MPG by themselves, but with the Gotts mod, I can see how they might be of benefit. The biggest savings is in replacement filters. I bought the filter, then the recharge kit 85,000 and over 4 years ago. Never bought another filter.

First, if your paying $50, that is too much, unless it includes the recharge kit. Should be around $43. They will cause MAF problems if you over oil. They won't if you don't. You have to follow the directions when it say "lightly". I have 85,000 miles with one and never a problem.

There are some dry, washable filters to check out now.

Love mine.
I have been putting them in various cars for the last 8 years. My Ford Exp. intake has been modified from the stock "Bong" fitting for reasons of air flow improvement. The current one has been installed since 2004.
There is a benefit in step response and HP, but the significance depends on your engine's Rev./Min. spent near or above 3,000 Rev./Min. I still recommend installing one if only because they are long lasting, and rugged.
In some earlier V-8's there is an IMT (Intake Manifold Tuning) system that intentionally limits intake manifold volume to help with with torque, and drive ability. This somewhat limits the benefit of the filter's low air restriction, but helps with "low-end" torque. However the improvement in response above 3,000 R/m. is very noticeable.
If you match the low restriction air filter with a free flowing exhaust system there is a direct benefit in engine response.

there are no real problems with K&N filters. its just that the oil can get onto the maf which can simply be cleaned. as long as you clean and oil it properly then it should be alright for a while. but if you notice any power losses or any running problems then i would clean the maf first. just a heads up.
and make sure you read the instructrions when you re-oil it. that way you dont over/under oil it.
edit: in all honesty if your looking for just a cleanable air filter then i'd get the amsoil filter. they are a dry filter and can be cleaned with a vacuum cleaner.

$50 for the K&N, Check @ Walmart, I had bought mine there for $35.00..,
The Filter works ok, but a true CAI, will wake up the 5.4, and a good programmer will kick it in the A**.

Well a few months ago i had an AEM CAI on it. But my truck didn't like it. It kept throwing lean codes.
I have an Edge Evolution and it couldn't fix the problem.
End of story, i had to take off the CAI and havent had the problem since.
Does any one know of a good intake that hasn't thrown codes on their 97-03 f150?
