With the 2004 and 2005, you run a good risk of running lean as many of these trucks came from the factory in a near lean condition. Additionally, if you don't have custom tunes to take advantage of the extra air, and and exhaust to expell the extra air, you will not get a lot of gain. Mostly, you will be making noise from removing the silencer on the stock intake.

Custum tune opposite of canned tune. To lean lose power / ad intake and fuel more power.

It's just the '04 5.4 that is very sensitive. They don't run lean enough to really hurt anything.

Just not as tolerant to changes and even a intake will throw a code.

The only intake that actually needs a custom tune or you WILL be dangerously lean is the 3.5" Air Force 1.

Thanks man. So on an 06 5.4 adding a CAI, and a SI/SO cat back would a canned tune be ok, or would I realize a difference with a custom tune?

You may or may not run lean. Not as likely to as the 04-05s. But, the custom tune is going to make the CAI work for you and adds several HP. The canned tunes are programmed for stock intakes, so your not really taking advantage of the CAI.

Cool. I've already decided my first purchase will be a Gryphon. I'll add on from there, and get custom tunes accordingly. Thanks for the input. Wish me luck on being customer number 500.

Help! My plans are to install AFE Stage 2 or S&B on my 4.6, magnaflow with duel exhaust future date. Should a tune be needed when CAI be installed?

not with a 4.6L, you'll be fine. I ran a S&B a good 7 months or so without a tune before I went in another direction.
