TruckStaxx on F150 Gas Engine Project!
TruckStaxx on F150 Gas Engine Project!
Seems like there is a small, but rising demand of the light duty trucks having stacks again. Whether it is diesel or gas powered, you CAN put stack on them, will no ill effects. The diesel gains will be higher, depending on the configuration. In the gasser world, you will notice small gains, but nothing more than if you ran duals or even a new muffler on the stock system.
How many F150's are there with stacks? A handful... but if done right will not only look impressive, but sound pretty good, not to mention the increase in performance and fuel mileage.
However, it is just another form of exhaust options... not looked upon much because of the complexity and price. You can get the same amount of performance out of running duals out the rear or even the side... or do it the super cheap way of running it hidden.
So why did I choose it? Well there are a number of reasons... I think the first reason is because there's a kid in all of us. Ever look on the toy shelves this Christmas? I did, because I was buying some toys for my friend's kids. It got me stirred up when I saw a F150 model with stacks... and I said to myself... "Ahh be darn! I always been wanting to do that to my truck..." I should've bought it... but I didn't and used it for a model of what I wanted to eventually do. Besides, I've been dreaming of this custom idea for a really long time. I, at first, didn't really like it, but the more I envisioned it, it didn't look so bad. When I got the tool box... the more I wanted it to look "commercialized, heavy duty, and have that big-rig look".
But let me digress. The other great reason I wanted it was because I wanted to separate the toolbox from the rear window a little bit, and it would really flow nice on a silver truck, with a lot of chrome going on around that particular area. So I thought up, well maybe I should get a nifty Backrack... But they don't sell them in chrome, and even if they did, they still would block my rear window with annoying lines. Plus I do a ton of night driving, and that would be rather annoying in the rear view mirror. So what to do? Get stacks, at least that what I thought would look awesome.
So not only did I get something added around my truck... but it is also very functional.
Noise concerns? Well, I was shuffling between either a Flowmaster 50 or 70 series. I went for the 50 series SUV only because it would give me the less resonance in the cab, but producing a mellow tone. But we'll see how that sounds on the V6, as we are going to test clamp it before we weld it. I'll drive around for a bit, and if I like it, I'll go with it. But that's neither here not there... I've got both a 70 and a 50 series SUV to work with.
Heat concerns? As we go delve into this project some more, we won't know... we've got an idea how it's going to be ran... but there are just some worries around the fuel tank. We will probably build a shield for it out of some diamond plate or aluminum.
Am I excited?! Yeah! Of course! I've been dying to do this mod... if I'm gonna do it, might as well do it now, or forever hold my peace sort of speak. Plus it is totally custom... not some fab-jab-job... you can't get anything like this off the market!
Now remember... this same mod can be done to BOTH diesels and gassers... so please, take some ideas out of this and if you want some stacks, apply it to your truck.
So anyways... this is what I got...
Bought the kit WLK-89303 and a Flowmaster 50 Series SI/DO SUV muffler.

They should come in this week... but we are not going to start on the project until next week.
The height of the Staxx will be even with the cab height. So it is NOT going to look obnoxious at all or take away from the truck...
So stay tuned for more...

i have a flowmaster 50 series on my v6, its a mellow muffler, but definitely a great tone. its not a v8, but its one of the best sounds a v6 could have. of course i have it dumped, but i have a few videos on youtube if you care to watch
Doesn't matter if it's dumped... it should be a little quieter running through the stacks though.
Do you got some links?
cab noise is a bit pissy with the dump. but when i had it running stock location, it was pretty perfect.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J0722S5LCsw heres one
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bciVcUo3fqo and the other
its not quiet, the camera i used sounds best with a subwoofer.

It sounds like it keeps a nice low tone... reminds me of the sound of a V10... if you ever heard one with a 50 series. Sure doesn't sound like a V8... but because of the firing order, it inherently makes that noise.
I like it... boy... It'll sound good with the echo of the stacks.
Thanks man!
you should mock up the pipes in place and post pics, i want to see this thing, quite interested

Yes... I didn't feel like finding a SI/SO on a Google Image search... so I pulled the first 50 series SUV that looked halfway decent to get my point across. I'll fix it later.
wait....so you're putting stacks on a basic v6 work truck of an F150 for the "big rig" look. Not only that, but you're using a quieter muffler to go with it....
Post whatever pics you've got because what I'm picturing looks hideous.

Sheesh... it's just like any other exhaust job, just with the tips being in a different place.
