Banks Intake Option as well as hp and mpg gains please
Banks Intake Option as well as hp and mpg gains please
Hey everyone, I decided on doing one mod before winter aside from the grille guard I have to order, since many people claim a 2 to 4mpg gain from doing the Banks Intake, I am interested in getting one. I am not sure if it directly bolts on or if any of this is true but since I need the truck for most of the winter, I would like to get some more highway mileage out of it. I'm hoping this might help.
Please post your opinions on this setup or any other that might give me more mpgs. As well if I need a tune to run this intake or not. My factory one was modified by a previous owner and all taped up with black tape, have no idea why but that can't be good for mpgs neither.
I'll post a pic when i get home of this.
Thanks for your opinions in advance.
I didn't get any response to the misspelled banka instead of banks thread so i decided to make this one instead. sorry for the double post.

I looked into the Banks as well....
For what it is, it was just a little high priced IMO...
I ended up going with the AirAid Modular Intake Tube and K&N Drop In Filter.
This whole set up cost me about 130 bucks.
I noticed a gain of about 2 - 3 MPG. And nothing put ya in the seat power but did get some more Pep out of the truck... And a Nice mellow growl under the hood.

AirAid modular intake tube, K&N filter, Magnaflow Exhaust, Line-X'd bed and fender wells, 2.5 Inch AS Level Kit and 3 inch AS Rear Block, 1 Mile range Viper 5900 SST remote start and alarm system, JL Audio Stealthbox, JL Audio 500/1, JL Audio 300/4, Alpine Type-R 6.5 inch components in front doors, Alpine Type-R 5x7's in rear doors, Alpine Iva-w505, LOTS of Dynamat, 15% Tinted windows, Billet Grills in factory H-bar and lower bumper.

oh wow thats a good improvement...yeah i've seen it for $400 now vs the $500+ from before, not as bad but still too pricey.
I have a 3 inch lift with leveling kit and bigger tires.....and the 5.4 motor and i'm only getting 10 to 12mpg is that correct? If so how much more than me are you getting now with the intake?

Sadly that's about right.
With the intake and exhaust I average about 12 - 14 MPG...
Mostly city driving...
On the Highway ( Open Road ) About 16 - 17 MPG
Those are both running on 89 octane
Oh, And at this time I do not have a tune, chip, etc...
Do plan to get an Edge maybe over winter... Hope that may help a little more too.

Here is the truck

and here is the modified intake with black taping, I'm not sure why it was done this way by the previous owner or how different it is from the original part in a f150. Pics would be great so I could see.
I know the engine is still dirty, I plan on cleaning it before swapping out the intake. I just bought it 2 weeks ago and have been thru so many family problems that I havent had a chance to make the truck my own yet.
One more thing is that the intake is completely lose, I can pull it apart from the center piece under the filter without much force. Also ford just switched my filters about 2 weeks ago and i took it out to check and i have a bunch of leaves in there....so is this normal or is it this form of modified intake? I'm just curious because I think thats running my mpgs.

Wow... They did hack it up pretty good...
Nice Truck though!!!
Here's a Dyno Chart on the intake which I have along with a picture of it installed on the truck...

As far as the leafs go.
Yes I would say it has A LOT to do with what they did to that intake...
What they did was cut off all the extra plastic to quite the intake from the factory which in turn causes a bunch of restriction...
However the route they took to get rid of it... Yeah Not so good.

oh wow thanks I appreciate that, and yes I noticed, glad I ordered the Banks for $300 on sale, now I can hopefully get the truck in good shape, looks great, but it wasn't too well taken care of. I need to Herculiner the bed and tailgate because they are all beat up too. That black stuff is really strong, the previous owner put it on the bumpers and I really like it.
Hey edgespeeder06, I saw some improvement with just the cai ,alittle more with the Monster. When I got my tune from VMP (93 octane gas milage tune) I saw the most improvement . I saw 19 to 20 mpg . And that was doing 70 on the freeway . Also that was with a leveling kit, OEM wheels and tires .Since then ,I added a 6in. lift with 35in tires . I try to forget about gas milage anymore LOL. 14 to 15 now .
