I have an 01 4.2 F150 and since i have to replace one of my cats i want to replace the stock exhaust with a DO/DO system, but my question is what kind of headers should i get? what is the difference between shorty's and long tube headers?

 

Long tubes gained me 30hp/35ftlbs. shorties gained me 0hp 0ftlbs.

 

Do they even make headers for the v6?

 

Yeah mac has one or you could probably use some from the V6 mustangs.

 

I guess that wasnt really my question. my question is if i want my exhaust to come out in front of the rear wheels, what would be the better set up. Long tube headers with shorty x pipe or shorty headers with a standard x pipe? will one give me more HP than the other? and if someone is running any of these set ups how do they perform?

 

i'm not 100% sure about trucks, but in cars (i used to be a tuner), Long tube headers were a huge improvement over shorty headers. gains with shorty headers are so minimal thats its not even really worth it.

so, im gonna say Long tube headers and a shorty x pipe will give you much better gains

Since there arnt any long tube headers for the 4.2 F150 could i use some intended for the mustangs?

 

for long tube headers you would have to bypass your cats

hence why majority of people running long tubes use high flow cats so they can be smog legal...

 

if you can only find the shorties then you need to ensure oyu get a set of equal lenghts, then put the headers on and take your truck to an exhaust shop and tell them what you want done...

Has anyone run long tube headers and cats on a 2007 F150 5.4? I was interested in the power gains and if its worth it or not? Not worried about the sound or anything. nothing is done to the motor its stock with a edge evolution on it.

 

Long tubes will give you more torque, but you'll need to redo the exhaust.
Short tubes flow better than stock and allow you to reuse the stock exhaust.
