CAI and towing

I just returned from a trip in the Sierra's that i do all the time towing my 22 ft trailer. This was the first time going over the pass with my CAI on and boy what a difference! It made so much noise I thought my truck was going to blow up. I made tha pass but it took much more work for the truck to do it than when it was stock! On level ground it seems to pull better and at very high RPMs but boy at low end or around 3000 rpms, not much there.. Anybody Have an Idea. Truck is in excelent shape other than the CAI. I think I will take it off.

This is a typical complaint with most CAI systems. I wanted to keep as much low end as possible and after alot of research I picked up a AF1 CAI and I must say I dont feel like I have lost any bottom end. The truck was never a rocket, but the FT/LBs seem to be coming on the same as they did as I monitor it with a ScanGuage II. All I can say is remove it and sell it to try and get some of the money back. While I do think an AF1 would help your problem I just read here the prices have jumped on them to almost $400. For that much $ your better off doing E Fans and getting better performance all around

So what mods are the most beneficial for towing? Tuner? e-fans? I had a Magnaflow catback installed and found a loss of low end torque very noticable when towing so I ended up going back to the stock exhaust.

I think the AFE is a good quality CAI but I think My expectations were to high. I think I am going to try a superchip tuner that they ( Superchip) said they will tune for the Cai. If that does not work...Off with the CAI. To much noise for the very modest gain.

I have an AF1 and a 22ft trailer as well. I just towed it throught the Rocky Mountains and had the same problem. I think now I am half deaf from how loud it was. You know the truck running at 2600-2800RPM for a long period of time sucks. I am tossing the idea of selling around too. Where do I find more info on these e fans? I also have TP custom tunes. I guess the truck was better than stock, but at higher rpms like that is there a big enough difference to keep the CAI?

I would steer away from the E-Fan kit that Troyer's Performance sells. It's had a lot of problems in the past and no one has been able to get them rectified. They blame the problems on installation error or misuse. Just ask "Josiah", he's a member here. I believe your best bet is to build your own set. It's not hard and there are plenty of write ups on here. Just do a bunch of searching.

I still do not think the gain justifies the noise. I did go back over the pass with a pre filter on and the noise was tolerable and I Hate to say it but the power was still about the same as with it running totaly free.leading me to believe the Cai really does not help much. I talked again to the real nice people at super chip and they told me if i had one of their tuners and felt that the truck was still ******* it under load they would write me an adjusted tune free of charge and send it to over the interneti think I will try this before I take it off.
by the way the top end power does seem to be better but I do not often accelerat hard from 70 to 90 to use it, but it is better there.
