just installed an s&b intake

about myself- im 17 with a part time job. this is the first mechanical/under-the-hood work ive ever done other than basic maintenance

my truck is 2002 f150 supercab fx4 with the 5.4

the product is an s&b cold air intake- bought from autoanything.com for $205

the installation went fairly smooth. i did hit a couple of snags- first was assembling the maf housing-heat shield-filter adapter combo. it had to be held at a certain angle so the maf didnt fall off or the screws fell out. the rubber gaskets had a hard time staying on the bolts as well. the first time i got it together, filter adapter was upside-down. that took me 30 minutes. after that it took me about 15 minutes the to get the air temperature sensor out of oem intake. as it was in pretty tight and i had to muscle it out carefully without breaking the little thing.

non related to the assembly, it started sprinkling on me in the driveway, so i had to move all my tools and the parts to the garage, while i assembled the maf housing and heat shield. my truck however had to stay in driveway since it is too big to fit in the garage. also a stray dog came in and laid down in the garage for half an hour before i got him to leave.

the instructions that it came with didnt tell me that i was supposed to use the washers when installing the heat shield to the fender. or that i had to cut the supplied hose in half to fit onto the upper vent hose.

oh well. i eventually got it all together and clamped. i hooked up the electrical connections for the maf and air temperature sensor. hooked up the negative battery terminal, and turned it on. no apparent leaks, and even better, no check engine light.

i took it for a spin and the engine does sound and breathe a lot better, especially at WOT.

overall i like the kit. for a novice, i was able to get it together without any big problems. so if i can do it, you can do it.

new filter vs old filter

finished installation

after taking this picture i fixed the filter clamp, as you can see in this one it is a little ****-eyed

all the tools i used- minus sockets

i did get a little dirty

My S&B will be here this week. Good info to know. I have installed many of these in the past but things like the IAT being hard to get out is good to know.

So, how do you think it helped the power? Anything?

Glad you like your S&B, have had mine for about 2 years. I LOVE mine. Certainly added a little get up and go, and helped compensate some for the mpg's lost after putting on bigger tires. Could be coincidence, but I can't complain after 2 years. "Recharging" the filter is a breeze too. I'm sure you'll both be happy with your S&B's.

Oh, and S&B must have gone up on their CAI's or I just got a heck of a deal. Hearing everyone spend around $200 I had to get out my old invoice...paid $130 + Shipping for mine from a shop in Ohio.
